About this listen

A retired university professor has just been diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease. Returning home from the doctor’s office, he witnesses a pretty young girl being kidnapped. Believing the police are dragging their feet, he vows to find her on his own. He knows that if he doesn’t act, she may never be found alive.

Jennifer Riggins, the kidnapped girl, is being held prisoner by a depraved couple who have started an exclusive website called What Comes Next. Viewers can watch her terrifying ordeal in real time, and thousands tune in for each episode of her ongoing nightmare. Jennifer has been renamed “Number Four”. Her life is just beginning, and her only hope is a man whose life is nearing its end.

Gripping

I had a hard time putting this one down. This book helps one see the devastation that is brought about through child exploitation, sexualization and endangerment. Gripping from start to finish!!

Wow! Great story

I understand why some reviewers might have not liked the narrator but I thought the narrator matched the voice of the main character perfectly!!! Book kept me engaged and the ending was not what I was expecting.

Great Story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I couldn't stop listening to the book (no thanks to the narrator!) and listened to it 4 hours at a time. I loved how you were in vested in the characters and were rooting for them. The story was great even though the narrator was annoying!

What didn’t you like about William Roberts’s performance?

I really disliked this narrator! I though he sounded like the narrator on the old Bullwinkle cartoons. It just sounded over the top and ridiculous. And his women's voices were like fingernails on a chalkboard. I will avoid listening to him in the future!

I liked it despite the narrator

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

It kept me listening as I wanted to find out what came next in the story's What Comes Next plot.

What aspect of William Roberts’s performance would you have changed?

I did not like his voices for this story at all. I hope the author changes the narrator for his next book.

One of a kind!! A great story full of surprises -

What did you love best about What Comes Next?

This is a most unusual hero and certainly this author is on my watch list now. I hope he is still writing and that the story is not based upon any true experiences or family history. The story and the characters never bored and often went in directions no other author that I've read has the courage to draw his characters. This book is one that as a story I really enjoyed - but also as an author, I see that successful stories can take most unusual trails. Oh so well done!

Have you listened to any of William Roberts???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

His performance was great. He used tone and cadence to portray one character or another - and this made his female, male young and old reasonable voices. He didn't make the females sound like a guy in drag as some do to let you know it is the female. Of course this means the story flowed and was consistent even though unpredictable.

Great book

I ready like the narrator voice, and the story was very nice but sad at the same time

Not terrible, but I struggled to get through it

The story was somewhat interesting, although I feel like it never really hit it's stride. the narration wasn't the worst I've ever heard but definitely didn't help the story. I finished it but had to speed up the narration to double speed and force myself yo power through. Probably not worth a credit.

I cant even get through it

I though the story would be so good that I could ignore the dullness of the narration, but it seems impossible, can I have my credit back? This was a waste :(

a fall from great heights

John Katzenbach has fallen from his successes like Hart's War and The Analyst. An overly theatrically told story from a dated mind is only compounded by the narrator, who imposes none of the menace that made katzenbachs earlier books so good.
