About this listen

What’s Wrong With Your Dad is the true story of what it was like growing up and surviving a family with both alcoholism and Borderline Personality Disorder. It is told in the first person in a very conversational way, like the author and the reader are just sitting over coffee talking. It explains in clear layman’s terms the behaviors of both alcoholism and Borderline Personality Disorder and lets the reader know in no uncertain terms that the behavior was not in any way created by any adult child of either an alcoholic or BPD.

This is a story of survival and a story of hope. It follows the author from birth to her late 40’s. From small farm town in California to her own private practice in Mesa, AZ. It is an empowering journey of learning how to survive damaging parents and teaching others how to survive damaging parents. Although the subject matter is sometimes hard to read there is a lot of humor, a lot of love and a lot of acceptance and understanding that will bring the reader to a greater understanding of what drives both alcoholism and BPD. The book teaches the reader that just because your childhood was rocky and not much fun it does not mean you cannot have success and fun as an adult.

This book was written in response to numerous clients who mistakenly believed that they were alone in the universe in having alcoholic and dysfunctional parents. In writing this book I have bared my soul and shown that they are not alone in surviving a frightening and baffling childhood due to both the personality disorder and the alcoholism of the parents. There is always, always hope.

I listened the audio book in one session. The story was well told, text flowing forward in a way it makes one almost forget the day to day struggle of many people it contains. The author's voice makes the story come alive. I have also watched some of the We Need to Talk Shows: behind the show and the book Kristine Godinez is a warm hearted encouraging professional. She has given me both new perspective to my work and useful information about the original wound for my personal life. Strong story of perseverance and survival. I was able to identify with so many of Kris’s feelings& experiences. I have become inspired to write my own story. I finished this book driving on the MASS PIKE and yes had a good short cry in the silence I was left in when the book finished. I know I am doing better these days because it was a short cry; thank you Kris for all of your wisdom, bottomless giving, support and humor. You have help me to emerge out the other side. THANK YOU!

Powerful ; Candid & uplifting in the end.

Simply put I grew up in what I believe to be a house with a BPD mom and a ASPD step dad and this book hit close to home. From the rages, self sabotage, substance abuse and denial from both my folks. And as someone who experienced severe sexual abuse from 2 to 17 with many of the same dynamics Kris speaks about in the book This book provides living examples of what is like in a home with personality disordered parents and toxic family members

I love the author and the fact that she does curse as it shows that it is okay to be angry and express emotions. I learned so much and am thankful. I found her advice to be accurate and spot on and has been very helpful while actively healing my CPTSD.

I found Kris Godinez on YouTube during a particularly challenging time in my life, that was in 2014. Having listened to her since then, 8 years now, it was only fitting that I chose this as my first Audible book experience. I own the paperback as well but nothing compares to hearing her story delivered firsthand. Kris knows her s#!+ and shares her knowledge in a way that is easily understood. I highly recommend this book to learn more about the author and how her life experiences brought her to the field of counseling and to us, her listeners.

Kris Godinez is a lifesaver and I’m eternally grateful for her.

Kris' acting background pays off with narration that is never dry or dull. I'm a fan of her YouTube content 'We Need To Talk ', and this book gives great context to those videos and where she is coming from. I found this book to be very informative and entertaining.

I love Kris Godinez
