A Collection of True Tales of Animal Empathy and Altruism That Will Inspire Us to Reflect on Our Own Human Nature

What do stories about humpback whales protecting a biologist from a shark, a pride of lions rescuing a girl from kidnappers, gorillas working together to dismantle poacher snares, a parrot warding off an attacker in a park, a chimpanzee consoling a human, and an elephant trying to rescue a baby rhino tell us about animal nature? And what might they suggest about our very own human nature?

Until just a few decades ago, there were only a few animals reported to behave empathetically and altruistically. More recently, the list of species who have been observed behaving in compassionate, helpful, and caring ways has grown exponentially, ranging from rats to elephants.

When Animals Rescue presents dozens of astonishing and heart-warming stories about animals, such as chickens, horses, dolphins, and wolves, who engage in acts of helpful kindness. During a time in history when studies show that human empathy is decreasing, our knowledge about animal empathy is increasing. These true tales of heroism, kindness, and compassion suggest that we have far more in common with other animals than we once believed and provocatively suggest that what’s best about our human natures just might be our animal natures.

Animal Heroes and Helpers

Author Belinda Recio has brought together a collection of stories of animals helping humans and other animals. I had heard of some of these instances, but most were new to me. She also has information about research that has been done regarding these specific events and about animal helpers in general. Overall it's a good presentation.

I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by actor and animal activist Hayden Panettiere. I'm sure this topic was close to her heart and it shows in her narration. Her voice is pleasant to listen to and she brings the written words of the author to life.

Thank you to Post Hypnotic Press for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

A terrific audiobook about how animals help others out of concern for others. The stories are lovely and worth listen to. The narrator is soothing to listen to and makes the story easy to listen to. Bye the way as a pet sitter I already know that animal being care about others and wonder what those who don't believe are afraid of. n
The audiobook can be listen to in a couple of days and can be listen to anytime you want stories that will make you feel good.

Animal Lovers Will LOVE THIS!

Okay, I haven't quite finished this book, but WOW! You could say I was a biased, as I'd already listened to and LOVED "Inside Animal Hearts and Minds" - same author and narrator - so I was expecting to enjoy this book. There is a bit of repetition from INSIDE, but that was okay. There were far more stories that were new and again, so surprising. And I listen to a lot of books about animal behavior! While Inside Animal Hearts and Minds is organized around the behavior it's exploring ("counting" or "humor", etc.), this book is organized by animals: "elephants," "dolphins," "cats"... Each section describes incidents in which these animals engaged in altruistic or helpful ways. As a person engaged in current events, I really found this both of these books to be relaxing, comforting, and enlightening breaks from the craziness of the world right now. Hayden Panettiere's narration is perfect. She sounds totally engaged in what she's reading. I only know her from Nashville, which my husband got me into watching years ago. These books are a far cry from her role on Nashville, and she does a great job! I would recommend these books for any age. They would be great to listen to on a family trip (if we ever get to do those again!), and equally wonderful for hanging around with your kids at home while, say, working on a puzzle.

An insightful foray into to cross species pro-social animal behavior.

A heartwarming account of instances of animal altruism. Given how rough the 2020-2022 time period has been, this collection of examples of cross-species assistance gives me warm fuzzies. This second book of Belinda Recio is just as fascinating and informative as her first book 'Inside Animal Hearts and Minds'. Stories of altruistic behaviors across species include birds, canines, elephants, porpoises, and primates, An informative feel-good listen.
