Publisher's summary

As Charles Darwin suggested more than a century ago, the differences between animals and humans are of degree and not of kind. Not long ago, ethologists denied that animals had emotions or true intelligence. Now, we know that rats laugh when tickled, magpies mourn as they cover the departed with greenery, female whales travel thousands of miles for annual reunions with their gal pals, seals navigate by the stars, bears hum when happy, and crows slide down snowy rooftops for fun.

In engaging text, photographs, and infographics, Inside Animal Hearts and Minds showcases fascinating and heart-warming examples of animal emotion and cognition that will foster wonder and empathy. Learn about an orangutan who does “macramé”, monkeys that understand the concept of money, and rats that choose friendship over food. Even language, math, and logic are no longer exclusive to humans. Prairie dogs have their own complex vocabularies to describe human intruders, parrots name their chicks, sea lions appear capable of deductive thinking akin to a 10-year-old child’s, and bears, lemurs, parrots, and other animals demonstrate numerical cognition.

In a world where a growing body of scientific research is closing the gap between the human and nonhuman, Inside Animal Hearts and Minds invites us to change the way we view animals, the world, and our place in it.

Animal Lovers Listen Up

Author Belinda Recio has brought together many examples of comparisons between animals and humans. Animals have friendships, laugh, play, have emotions, and are intelligent each in their own way. She also has information about scientific research that has been done in each of these areas so it's not just people saying they see something happen. Researchers have put a lot of time and effort in exploring this portion of the animal kingdom. Overall the book is well organized.

I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by actor and animal activist Hayden Panettiere. Her voice is pleasant and friendly and her passion for animals shows in her caring tone.

Thank you to Post Hypnotic Press for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Fabulous

Shows exact examples of empathy of animals towards other species, as well as each other. Animals are far less cruel than humans.

Positively heartwarming and informative to boot!

A fascinating account of social behaviors both within and cross species from several different species of animals. Clearly narrated and eloquently written. A great listen for anyone upper elementary and above. Easy to understand for the layman. A heart-warming listen for anyone needing a dose of positivity with their learning.

Surprisingly Satisfying!

I love books about animal behavior, especially primates and dogs, but I wasn't sure about this book. I guess I just wasn't sure what it was about. I LOVED IT! It's a collection of stories about animals that surprised and delighted me. Recio offers stories about a wealth of research and animal observations that illustrate how much other animals have in common with us. When I was in school many many years ago, this would have been sneered at as "anthropomorphizing" animal behavior, but these aren't just anecdotes; they are often stories from the lab or carefully crafted investigations. Truly fascinating and fun book. And Hayden Panettiere (who I loved in Nashville) did a lovely job narrating. She has a lovely voice and she was engaged and engaging. Well done! I've downloaded another book by Recio - When Animals Rescue - and I'm looking forward to more!
