About this listen
Gold Medallion Book Award Winner. Over a million copies sold.
An inspirational classic for more than thirty years, Where Is God When It Hurts? honestly explores pain—from physical wounds to emotional and spiritual pain—and sheds new light on God's presence in our suffering.
"How can a loving God allow this to happen? God is either all-loving or all-powerful, but he can't be both."
You've heard that question, and perhaps you've even asked it yourself. When a loved one dies, we receive a terminal diagnosis, or natural disasters strike, people often wonder whether God is the cause of suffering and why he doesn't immediately take away the pain or fix the situation. As a result, we become angry at the once-beloved God who betrayed us.
Bestselling author Philip Yancey uses examples from the Bible and from his own experiences to show us how we can learn to accept—without blame, anger, or fear—what we don't understand. Along the way, he answers questions such as:
- Why is there such a thing as pain?
- Is pain a message from God?
- How should we respond to suffering?
- How can we learn to cope with pain?
Where Is God When It Hurts? speaks to everyone who thinks that suffering doesn't make sense. With compassion and clarity, Yancey brings us one step closer to finding an answer when our pain, or the pain of those we love, is real and we are left wondering, where is God when it hurts?
"One of the most helpful treatments of the problem of evil that I've ever read. If I were looking around for something to give to individuals who are going through travail or difficulty, this is the book I'd recommend." —Dr. Vernon Grounds, former Chancellor of Denver Seminar

Story
Insights from Philip Yancey's personal pilgrimage away from and back to the church. Why are there so many more professing Christians than churchgoing Christians? Is it because something is wrong with the church? In his candid, thought-provoking manner, award-winning author Philip Yancey reveals the reasons behind his own journey back from skepticism to wholehearted participation in the church, and weighs the church's human failings against its compelling worth as the body of Christ.

Story
Christians have proclaimed the good news about Jesus for centuries. But the good news isn't sounding so good these days, at least to some. More and more surveys show that people view Christians as bearers of bad news, judgment, and intolerance. In Vanishing Grace, best-selling author Philip Yancey acknowledges the problem and then explores how we can respond with both grace and truth. He offers a discerning look at what contributes to a hostility toward Christians, and identifies three groups - pilgrims, artists, and activists - who can show us a different way.

Philip Yancey, whose explorations of faith have made him a guide for millions, feels no need to defend the church. Yancey acknowledges that many spiritual seekers find few answers and little solace in the institutional church. How did Yancey manage to survive spiritually despite early encounters with a racist, legalistic church that he now views as almost cultic? In this, his most soul-searching book yet, he probes that very question.

As the world entered the long night of 2020, Philip Yancey turned to John Donne's Devotions, a nearly 400-year-old manuscript, for guidance. In it, he found a trustworthy companion for living through a global pandemic—or any other crisis. As Yancey says, "Nothing had prepared me for Donne's raw account of confrontations with God." By faithfully and poetically rendering Donne's 17th century prose into 21st century vernacular, Yancey opens up this classic work to a new generation.

Story
Philip Yancey probes the very heartbeat of our relationship with God: prayer. What is prayer? Does it change God's mind or ours or both? This book is an invitation to communicate with God the Father who invites us into an eternal partnership through prayer.

A must read for those who are grieving...
Phillip Yancey provides an honest, truthful and heartfelt examination on suffering and a sobering reminder of where God is in all of this dreaded yet inevitable human experience that is suffering.

Good book
Philip Yancey talks about questions that every single person has asked. Where is God when it hurts? That is a very common question for every single person no matter who you are. I have enjoyed this book as Philip Yancey talks about God and pain.

A Must Read
As a True Life Christian whose gone through his share of suffering (the greatest of which I was just a couple of weeks past my 18th birthday when I suffered a traumatic brain injury & 1 month coma), this book comes highly recommended by me! It is not that we go looking for the path that we think could bring us the most pain, but gives you the hope to deal with it with Jesus at the center of your life.

One of my all time favs, updated
Fabulously deep book on pain - so caring and insightful. Judith West, there is still need for editing of the audible version - mistakes of the readings in several chapters (ie ch 12).

Why Pain and Suffering are Necessary
Where does Where Is God When It Hurts? rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is a very thorough book on the theology of pain. Godly people have reasons why a good person is suffering, but are not accurate in their views of God.

Timeless
This was assigned reading for a grief support specialist class I am participating in. I wish I would have read it years ago. I think I thought it was a negative rap in God. But far from it, the author makes his case in a very faith-rich fashion. I recommend for anyone suffering or wishing to come alongside sufferers.
