About this listen

In the latest mystery from the national best-selling author of When Falcons Fall, the gruesome murder of a young boy takes Sebastian St. Cyr from the gritty streets of London to the glittering pleasure haunts of the aristocracy....

London, 1813. Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is no stranger to the dark side of the city, but he's never seen anything like this: the brutalized body of a 15-year-old boy dumped into a makeshift grave on the grounds of an abandoned factory. One of London's many homeless children, Benji Thatcher was abducted and tortured before his murder - and his younger sister is still missing. Few in authority care about a street urchin's fate, but Sebastian refuses to let this killer go unpunished. Uncovering a disturbing pattern of missing children, Sebastian is drawn into a shadowy, sadistic world. As he follows a grim trail that leads from the writings of the debauched Marquis de Sade to the city's most notorious brothels, he comes to a horrifying realization: Someone from society's upper echelon is preying upon the city's most vulnerable. And though dark, powerful forces are moving against him, Sebastian will risk his reputation and his life to keep more innocents from harm....

This reading gives one a realistic view of the short comings of humanity and evokes the question : how do I help others.

I love the rendition and await the next reading of Jarvis's reasoning for possibly killing of his wife

Where the Dead Lie

Powerful, disturbing and heartbreaking all in one

The life of children on the street is a reality and it is brought forth in vivid detail as to what can happen.

Sebastian struggles to bring a murderer to justice and the scenes are intense. There is still more to come and I know this author and narrator will continue to bring these amazing stories alive

The best in the series so far

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. This book is not only a great mystery, but also a look at complicated personal relationships.

Which character – as performed by Davina Porter – was your favorite?
Davina gave Sebastian and Hero great voices. Both their fathers are so different.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. Unfortunately, the book is over 10 hours and if you have a life "this ain't happening!"

Any additional comments?
Wow! I loved this mystery. The plot and writing style were great. This is the 12th book in the series and the best. Besides the mystery, the personal story was fantastic. Devlin's relationships with his wife and son, his father, father-in-law, his tiger, and his sister and niece were riveting.#tagsgiving #sweepstakes #SelfDiscovery #Suspenseful

Another outstanding book in the series!

Once again C. S. Harris explores the society of Regency England. Although the book can be read as standalone, it is greatly enhanced by the personal history laid out in previous stories.

Very powerful!

The subject matter was a particularly moving one. I had known there were large numbers of street children, but I had not realized that mothers had been transported and not allowed to take their children with them. I can’t imagine the heartbreak knowing one’s children would be left to fend for themselves. And the street children were so vulnerable. There is a character that definitely will be dealt with in a future book and another highly suspicious one that I hope will be. Ms. Porter’s narration is exceptional, as always.

Best in the series

While I have enjoyed the entire St. Cyr series, this book is the best! Ms Harris does an amazing job of showing many sides of her complex characters, St. Cyr is the concerned and loving husband, father, and uncle, and also the relentless, angry, bull-headed detective trying to find who is torturing and murdering the most vulnerable of London's poor. Hero's interviews with the poor orphans is a fine way of building sympathy for the plight of the abandoned children, and it makes the rest of the mystery even more believable and sad., And we gain more insights into Hendon's feelings about St. Cyr.

Don't start here - you really need all the carefully built background from the previous books to appreciate this one, but don't miss Where The Dead Lie. Masterful storytelling!

***SPOILER ALLERT!!!!!*****
I think Hero's mother was poisoned by the fair of appearance, but evil evil beneath the surface. new cousin, who will also be found guilty of her husbands' murders. Just sayin'.

Another great addition to this series.

I love this series. I am all about the characters, their personal stories, even more so than the mystery elements.

Another hit

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

As usual, Davina Porter did a great job with the characters voices. Makes one feel inside the action.

Any additional comments?

Even though I did like the novel, I feel that I was left "hanging " in the end. I sure hope this will be solved in the next installment. I don't mind personal cliff hangers, but I like the mystery completely solved and explained by the end of each book.
