About this listen

The riveting true story of decadence, deception, and murder among British aristocrats in colonial Kenya

In 1941, with London burning in the Blitz, a group of hedonistic English nobles partied shamelessly in Kenya. Far removed from falling bombs, the wealthy elites of "Happy Valley" indulged in morphine, alcohol, and unrestricted sex, often with their friends' spouses. But the party turned sinister in the early hours of a January morning for Josslyn Hay, Lord Erroll, who had been enjoying the favors of the beautiful young wife of a middle-aged neighbor. Hay was found dead, a bullet in his brain. The murder shocked the close-knit community of wealthy expatriates in Nairobi and shined a harsh light on their louche lifestyle.

Three decades later, author James Fox researched the slaying of Lord Erroll, an unsolved crime still sheathed in a thick cloud of rumor and innuendo. What he discovered was both unsettling and luridly compelling. White Mischief is a spellbinding true-crime classic, a tale of privileged excess and the wages of sin, and an account of one writer's determined effort to crack a cold and craven killing.

Contains mature themes.

Sooooo boring!

I can’t believe I listened to this all the way to the end. First of all, the narrator droned monotonously, never showing a hint of interest in the topic. (Apparently he was as bored as I). Furthermore, the people chronicled were a bunch of upper class wastrels with a juicy murder thrown in for good measure. Yet this author managed to reduce what should have been a sure-fire page turner into unremitting dullness. One of the worst books I have ever listened to. Don’t waste your time!

Hollywood Movie Worthy Story!

Why this hasn’t Ben made into a modern film is beyond me. The death of Lord Errol and the intrigue of the Happy Valley set has been a literary following of mine for ages. This book sets the stage for a drama that covers all the bases; sex, drugs, love affairs, love triangles, and the societal expectation of the upper crust “do-but-don’t-tell-darling” carries this lovely narrative. Mr. Fox has carefully studied his subject matter and gives attentive little biographies and backgrounds to the principle cast and settings. Combined as a biography, murder mystery, love story, and social study of a region that is still wild and untamed, this book is a fabulous diversion and goes a long way in giving a positive “who-dunnit” based of first hand accounts and thorough investigative research. Highly recommend!
