About this listen

New York City, 1962. Vera Kelly is struggling to make rent and blend into the underground gay scene in Greenwich Village. She's working night shifts at a radio station when her quick wits, sharp tongue, and technical skills get her noticed by a recruiter for the CIA.

Next thing she knows she's in Argentina, tasked with wiretapping a congressman and infiltrating a group of student activists in Buenos Aires. As Vera becomes more and more enmeshed with the young radicals, the fragile local government begins to split at the seams.

When a betrayal leaves her stranded in the wake of a coup, Vera learns the Cold War makes for strange and unexpected bedfellows, and she's forced to take extreme measures to save herself.

An exhilarating coming-of-age story, Who Is Vera Kelly? introduces an original, wry, and whip-smart female spy for the 21st century.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Elisabeth Rodgers flawlessly portrays Vera as a troubled teenager and as the conflicted more mature operative who is trying to do the right thing in the powder keg of pre-coup Buenos Aires. Rodgers's facility with the Spanish phrases and place names brings to life Vera's experience in Argentina. The result is a captivating listening experience." (AudioFile)

Plodding

Was very excited about the story but didn't have enough action to keep my attention

Try it, you'll like it!

An intriguing story that made me want to keep listening. to the very end. I would describe this as more of an adventure story than an espionage tale, even though there are some good passages about spy tradecraft. Vera's character is very compelling, and it feels like one is getting a realistic sneak peek into two very different worlds, one in 1960s America and the other in 1960s Argentina. More light-hearted than profound, but I definitely recommend!

Unexpected Gem

I am usually mentally deconstructing a book"s style and technique, but this book was thoroughly enjoyable and had few holes to poke at, which was also fun. Just an interesting novel, with a nice lilting style, both a meandering and driving story, and unusual relatable characters.

Addendum: I realized in my book club (Austin Public Library LGBTQIA+ Rainbow Book Club) that one of the holes wasn't a hole at all. The main character acted like and idiot around this young woman character, which at first made no sense to me, since she was normally smart in her behaviors. But as I complained about this to my book club, I realized the main character had said she had a crush on the young woman that made her mind disengage around her. Love my book club.

not a whole lot of spycraft just a good story

I love spy novels and this is definitely one that took me a different direction but all in all not what I would return to if looking for a novel in the Spy genre

Boring

A sort of spy doing something in BA while being bisexual in the 60s. I kept
Thinking something would happen that would make me care about her activities, but it didn’t.
