About this listen

The death of a fiendish nobleman strikes close to home as Sebastian St. Cyr is tasked with finding the killer to save his young cousin from persecution in this riveting new historical mystery from the USA Today best-selling author of Why Kill the Innocent....

When the handsome but dissolute young gentleman Lord Ashworth is found brutally murdered, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is called in by Bow Street magistrate Sir Henry Lovejoy to help catch the killer. Just seven months before, Sebastian had suspected Ashworth of aiding one of his longtime friends and companions in the kidnapping and murder of a string of vulnerable street children. But Sebastian was never able to prove Ashworth's complicity. Nor was he able to prevent his troubled, headstrong young niece Stephanie from entering into a disastrous marriage with the dangerous nobleman.

Stephanie has survived the difficult birth of twin sons. But Sebastian soon discovers that her marriage has quickly degenerated into a sham. Ashworth abandoned his pregnant bride at his father's Park Street mansion and has continued living an essentially bachelor existence. And mounting evidence - ranging from a small bloody handprint to a woman's silk stocking - suggests that Ashworth's killer was a woman.

Sebastian is tasked with unraveling the shocking nest of secrets surrounding Ashworth's life to keep Stephanie from being punished for his death.

The killer is obvious...

From just about the beginning of the novel but what a ride getting there! Starts slow but eventually picks up with a satisfying finish. Not to mention that the narrator, Davina Porter, is first rate, as always.

So if you don’t mind figuring out who done it from the very beginning it’s still an enjoyable listen.

Suspenseful and Atmospheric

I love this series and this particular book is another great one. Besides excellent plotting and mystery building and engaging characters, the series offers a wealth of historical detail, putting history in a contextual and personal perspective that I find informative and enjoyable. I now feel much more acquainted with Regency England.

Another great Sebastian St. Cyr thrill ride!

C.S. Harris is a master at weaving history, murder, politics, and semi justice into an edge of your seat story. (No spoilers here!) The book is so well written that I could see it all play out in my head. This series is one of my favorites. I love Sensation and Hero, and it's always great to catch up with the rest of the supporting cast as well. I'm already looking forward to Sebastian's next adventure!

Not the best in the series

This wasn’t the best plot in the series, but it was still definitely worth a listen. Davina Porter, was always, did an excellent job with the characters and accents.

Holds true to the series

If you have read this far into the series you know what the books are like and this is true to the previous in the series. I always enjoy the books. There are definitely stories that catch my attention more than others but I have yet to be disappointed.

Enjoyable book and series

A very enjoyable book and series. The underlying story progression always fits so well in each book. I also like the history in the author’s notes. There is no better narrator than Davina Porter!
