About this listen

Dedicated as few men have been to the life of reason, Bertrand Russell has always been concerned with the basic questions to which religion also addresses itself - questions about man’s place in the universe and the nature of the good life, questions that involve life after death, morality, freedom, education, and sexual ethics. He brings to his treatment of these questions the same courage, scrupulous logic, and lofty wisdom for which his other work as philosopher, writer, and teacher has been famous. These qualities make the essays included in this collection perhaps the most graceful and moving presentation of the freethinker's position since the days of Hume and Voltaire.

Whether listeners share or reject Bertrand Russell’s views, they will find this book an invigorating challenge to set notions, a masterly statement of a philosophical position, and a pure joy to listen to. This collection was edited, with Lord Russell’s full approval and cooperation, by Professor Paul Edwards of the Philosophy Department of New York University.

Thank you for keeping this book available us, especially so in audio format. I enjoy hearing of Lord Russell's thoughts and reasons, as they've inspired challenging my own. Perhaps he will inspire you, as well.

So Damn Interesting. So Much to Reconsider.

Loved it especially the chapter on Thomas Paine. Paine's writings should be taught more broadly.

Another insightful listen

As said by a few other reviewers, I share their minor annoyances with the debate chapter, and the voice representations performed by the narrator. With that entirely aside, I loved this compilation of essays, and everything else included in it! Definitely a top recommended book!

I loved it!

Thought provoking work. Especially in the climate live in today. Highly recommended listen if you are curious about religion, in general.

Good book overall. It's obvious from the content that many of the modern atheist writers have read Russell's works. Several of the concepts in Hitchens', Harris', Dawkins', and Dennett's works seem to be found here.

I would have found this book to be better had a couple of changes been made, both involving the narrator rather than the content itself. First, it would have been helpful--particularly in the final chapter--if the author had not read Russell's opponents' views in a condescending, moralistic voice. I feel like I owe everyone fair play, and not being able to hear Russell's detractors' words in a normal voice hindered that ability. Second, there is a missing chunk of audio roughly 1 1/2 minutes from the end of the whole book. I guess I'll never know what that section was, and I don't want to buy the hard-copy to see just how much content is missing.

Good overall

This audio book is composed of several pierces of work by Russel and for the most part is excellent. I’m not sure why they through in the last large chapter witch is completely about troubles Russell had with the court system and college. If they would have left that part out this book would have been 100% excellent

90% excellent 10% unnecessary
