Publisher's summary

When Jack Deere turned 17, he did not know God or a single verse of Scripture. At 27, he became a professor of Old Testament Exegesis and Semitic Languages at Dallas Theological Seminary. He started and pastored an influential church in Ft. Worth, Texas. He taught his church and his students that God no longer gave the "miraculous gifts of the Spirit" or spoke outside the pages of Scripture.

After teaching seminary for 10 years, a best-selling author shocked Deere when he told him that he not only believed God was regularly healing people today, but that he had seen undeniable miracles in answer to his prayers. For the next four months, Deere studied every healing story in the New Testament. This time he came to those stories with the open mind of a scholar, completely at home in the original languages of the Bible, not as a gullible student swallowing the prejudices of his teachers. At the end of those four months, Deere was convinced, against his will, that God was still healing and speaking just as he had done in the New Testament.

Deere and his wife Leesa began to pray for people in their church and witnessed dramatic, documented healings.

In Why I Am Still Surprised by the Power of the Spirit, Deere demonstrates that the Scriptures teach that God is healing and speaking today just as he did 2,000 years ago. He tells documented stories of modern miracles. He explains the nature of spiritual gifts, defines each spiritual gift, offers sound advice on discovering and using the gifts in church today. He shows how all of this part of God's way of deepening our friendship with him.

A modern classic, Surprised by the Power of the Spirit was published 25 years ago, and in that book, Deere claimed that he would live long enough to see the majority of conservative evangelicals come to believe in all the gifts of the Spirit.... That has come true. The theological landscape has changed dramatically. Nearly completely rewritten, this new edition still offers that proof but has about 70 percent new material on the practical matters of experiencing and using spiritual gifts. For example, anyone who prays regularly for the sick will encounter demonic power. Demons pop up all over the Synoptic Gospels. There are two new chapters on ministering to the demonized. There is much confusion on what it means to be filled with the Spirit today. Deere takes three chapters to examine every use of "filled with the Spirit" and "full of the Spirit" in the New Testament to show why and how God still fills his servants with the Holy Spirit. There are many new stories of God's power, even walking on water and multiplying food. Deere also introduces the newest literature defending and explaining the gifts of the Spirit. All this and more continues the book's legacy for a new time in this audio version.

Appendixes 4 and 5, "Were There Only Three Periods of Miracles?" and "New Testament Teachings about Demons", are available in the audiobook companion PDF download.

Superb handbook with real life examples

As part of my healing ministry, I refer to this book often. The simple real life examples, make this a wonderful book to quote and it gives us a pathway to doing Gods work here on earth. Thank you so much for putting this book on audible.

Powerful, encouraging, and irrefutable evidence!

Jack Deere has written a powerful and encouraging treatise in defense of the continuance of God's mighty power among His people. The only way to refute it is to do so the way the Pharisees refuted the miracles of Jesus: close your eyes, put your hands over your ears, and hunker down in defiant unbelief.

Jack's book is filled with Bible, historical, and anecdotal proof that one cannot "reasonably" say God does not speak and heal today. He is gracious in his defense of this truth (far more gracious than the Pharisees who attack him!). Nonetheless, he thoroughly obliterates the lies that would turn the risen Christ, who never changes, into a semi-retired, hammock-swinging Savior who rarely acts for, through, or to His people.

Thank you, Jack! I've been a fan of yours for many, many years. Your books have helped me in my own supernatural ministry. And because of this I have been blessed to participate in many wonderful miracles, healings, and heaven-to-earth communications.

Balanced

Jack is very balanced in his approach the the supernatural. He does still come from the perspective of the institutional Church and frames everything in that light. But most of what he says can be applied to the home church, simple church or any Disciple Making movement.

Clear & Concise

The truth will set you free! The Appendices is the icing on the cake for this book. Thank you, Jack, for clearing up all the confusion and misconceptions I’ve had about Spiritual gifts...including my own. It helped so much that the author read it. His common sense approach and Scripture references remove all doubt & mysteries surrounding this hot topic in the church today. Jack has been a guest at our church in Beaumont, TX. He is the real deal! I would recommend this book to anyone who may think that Spiritual gifts are no longer needed in the church; or if you’re not sure what it all means.

Fundamental

As a Christian from childhood raised in a cessationist environment, fundamental principles that are taken for granted by charismatics are tough to grasp. This was an unfolding understanding with clear Biblical support from an author credentialed in Biblical study AND the original texts. This was a godsend!

Outstanding!

Combing form the baptist, university and seminary trained, I, for one, really appreciate Jack Deere’s in-depth analysis of the Bible. I am shocked on how much the Baptist have allowed the enemy to infiltrate its borders and cause them to have a form of religion, but denying its power.
