Van Dusen ist nach Neapel vorausgefahren, und als Hatch ihm wenig später folgt, muss er feststellen, dass sein Freund spurlos verschwunden ist. Jetzt bleibt ihm nichts anderes übrig, als sich auf die Suche zu machen und zur Abwechslung mal selber Detektiv zu spielen. Nach mancherlei Abenteuern in der Ruinenstadt Pompej und nachdem er mehrmals über Leichen stolpert, wird ihm klar, was gespielt wird. In höchst angenehmer weiblicher Begleitung bricht er zu einer Motorboot-Tour übers Mittelmeer auf, wobei es ihm schließlich gelingt, den Professor, der sich derweil selbst aus dem Kerker der Camorra befreit hat, in einem Rettungsring treibend aus dem Wasser zu fischen.
