Publisher's summary
Word Workout is a practical audiobook for building vocabulary - a graduated program featuring thousands of words that begins with those known by most college graduates and ascends to words known only by the most educated, intelligent, and well-read adults. This workout is a comprehensive program, chock-full of information about synonyms, antonyms, and word origins, and replete with advice on proper usage and pronunciation. There are also creative review quizzes at each step of the way to measure your progress and reinforce learning. Unlike other vocabulary books, Word Workout provides a complete learning experience with clear explanations and surefire methods to retain new knowledge. Far more than a cram session for a standardized test, this book is designed as a lifetime vocabulary builder, featuring words used by the top tier of literate Americans, laid out in 10 accessible chapters designed for anyone who is looking for some serious verbal exercise.
From "avowal" to "proselytize", from "demagogue" to "mendicant", Charles Harrington Elster has carefully picked the words you need to know, and given you an easy, fast, and fail-safe way to learn and remember them.

Story
In Joel's Schwartzberg's 10-plus years as a strategic communications trainer, the biggest obstacle he's come across - one that connects directly to nervousness, stammering, rambling, and epic fail - is that most speakers and writers don't have a point. They typically have just a title, a theme, a topic, an idea, an assertion, a catchphrase, or even something much less. This book shows you how to identify your point, leverage it, stick to it, and sell it and how to train others to identify and successfully make their own points.

Aristotle's Poetics is best known for its definitions and analyses of tragedy and comedy, but it also applies to truth and beauty as they are manifested in the other arts. In our age, when the natural and social sciences have dominated the quest for truth, it is helpful to consider why Aristotle claimed poetry is more philosophical and more significant than history. Like so many other works by Aristotle, the Poetics has dominated the way we have thought about all forms of dramatic performance in Europe and America ever since.

Story
Ralph Waldo Emerson is one of the most important figures in the history of American thought, religion, and literature. The vitality of his writings and the unsettling power of his example continue to influence us more than a hundred years after his death. Now Robert D. Richardson Jr. brings to life an Emerson very different from the old stereotype of the passionless Sage of Concord.

Almost everyone swears, or worries about not swearing, from the two year-old who has just discovered the power of potty mouth to the grandma who wonders why every other word she hears is obscene. Whether they express anger or exhilaration, are meant to insult or to commend, swear words perform a crucial role in language. But swearing is also a uniquely well-suited lens through which to look at history, offering a fascinating record of what people care about on the deepest levels of a culture - what's divine, what's terrifying, and what's taboo.

Story
One of Nietzsche’s earliest works, The Birth of Tragedy (1872) is a remarkable source of inspiration. It is here that the philosopher expresses his frustration with the contemporary world and urges man to embrace Dionysian energy once more. He refutes European culture since the time of Socrates, arguing that it is one-sidedly Apollonian and prevents man from living in optimistic harmony with the sufferings of life.

How to Win an Election is an ancient Roman guide for campaigning that is as up-to-date as tomorrow's headlines. The most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes, the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his or her own instincts and ideas. It is the source of one of Emerson's most famous quotations, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." This essay is a considered a watershed moment in which transcendentalism became a major cultural movement. An American classic.

As the main spoken language of the Jews for more than a thousand years, Yiddish has had plenty to lament, plenty to conceal. Finally found the perfect vocab book
I am very stingy with my credits. This book is so, so worth it! I was kind of worried that the words would be too easy at first, but that is NOT the case. And even so, Mr. Harrington Elster includes valuable information such as etymology, synonyms, applications so you learn way more about words you may already know.
The words get progressively more difficult as the book goes on and I am very pleased that the last 100+ words are obscure to the point I’ve never even heard them before.
Also, this is narrated by the author (who has an excellent voice—I read that he was a voice talent), and he’s pretty clearly a pedant, which is exactly what I want from someone pronouncing difficult vocabulary.

EDUCATIONAL, ENTERTAINING, ENGROSSING, ETC.
Would you consider the audio edition of Word Workout to be better than the print version?
Yes.
What other book might you compare Word Workout to and why?
"Verbal Advantage," also by Mr. Elster, is exceptionally excellent, or, if you will, super superb!
Which character – as performed by Charles Harrington Elster – was your favorite?
The English language, as performed by Mr. Elster, becomes a weapon of choice.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. The spirit was willing, but the flesh was weak. Woulda. Coulda. Shoulda. But did not.
Any additional comments?
Five stars all the way around, except re: usage. Mr. Elster's elitist, schoolmarmish refusal to allow the English language to lead its own life, in its own way, on the tongues of its speakers, is snooty, snobby, constrictive, constraining, constipated, and contrary to the realities of experience. Listening to Mr. Elster nay-saying the free speech of a free people is nauseating. Reminds me of Xerxes punishing the ocean by going down to the beach and whipping the waves into submission. Better to let the waves come in and the words come out.
