About this listen

The Norfolk coast made for a perfect holiday - as long as the sun still shone. But when the rain came, the creatures left the shadows....

Worms

Spectres from the past tortured James Hildebrand's mind. His blackest nightmares were crowded with malevolent, coiling images of decay. Then, suddenly, he knew the threat was real.

Worms

The dead alone could not quench their hunger. And, for the living, the horrors that fed and multiplied in the darkness of the night became more terrible with the dawn....

Written by screenwriter Christopher Wood (The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker) under the pseudonym James R. Montague - an homage to the great ghost story writer M. R. James - Worms (1979) is a rediscovered horror gem that will make your skin crawl.

It was ok

I had a hard time getting into this story. For me the story started out slow and boring so it took me a few days to get into this book. It it definitely classic horror so per the other reviews you'd like this if that's the kind of horror you're into. I don't always go off of the reviews when I pick books because everyone's tastes are different and sometimes I like books that a lot of people don't care for; but this is a story true to the reviews. If you're more into modern horror (like I am) then you should skip this book. I gave this book 4 stars because the story was solid and I'm sure if I was more into classic horror I would have loved it. I don't think the overall rating of the book should be brought down just because this story wasn't my cup of tea. It was a good solid story and the narrator did an excellent job too.

I was provided a free copy of this book at my request for my honest and unbiased review.

Awesome Creature Feature

Awesome creature feature with a tortured protagonist giving a juxtaposition between psychological horror and horror of a more straight forward kind. Like any good creature horror story that's not all that's going on as in response to the existence of the title worms humans find it in their capability to cast doubt on who the real 'enemy' is. And along the way it's exciting and creepy and gross (worms right?).

Narration is fantastic.

I received the audiobook code for this at my request and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Worms

Eerie,gross,fun..it is all those wrapped into one book.I loved the setting and ambience of this book. A man retires to a small town by the beach only to find that you can not escape justice. Hannibal Hills was the perfect narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.'

Excellent

I’m glad these classic horror novels are getting new life in audiobook form
Part psychological horror and part creature feature that still holds up
The narration by Hannibal with his deep voice and pleasant accent fit the story perfectly
If you like 70s and 80s horror don’t skip this one

The Worms Crawl In, The Worms Crawl Out

Whoa, what a story! I had a lot of fun with this and the narrator killed it! There were such great descriptions in this book, like one that made me change my dinner plans when saucy spaghetti was involved in describing a mass of worms! Author really wrote an incredible story and I definitely recommend😁

Great mix of horror and mystery

This novel had a great creepy old vibe to it with a bit of supernatural mixed in. There's some murder, there's a creepy little town, there's some odd occurrences of all types (both human and "other"). I was hooked from beginning to end.

This is an older horror novel. I believe it takes place in the 70's or 80's. I mention that because 1) there's a different tone than that of contemporary works and 2) you may notice the lack of cell phones in certain situations. Neither of these are a bad thing though!

The narration was excellent. In some stories there are certain words that get repeated to the point that it becomes a bit of an annoyance. In this story, the word was obviously "worms". That said though, I actually loved it. As the story went on, each of the narrator's pronunciations of WURRRRRMMMS perfectly relayed the increasing horror and disgust that the protagonist had to be feeling.

While this was a great ride, I do wish there were a clearer resolution to some plot points though. I walked away feeling that this story took place in a larger universe and I needed to listen to other works in it to get a better idea of the bigger picture.

I was provided this audiobook at my request and am leaving this review voluntarily. It reflects my own thoughts on the material and no one else's. Overall though, definitely worth a listen.

Holy Shit

If you like classic horror and creature features, then this is the book for you! First of all, this story was first written in 1979 so I'd avoid this one if you require modern horror tropes. Psychological horror combined with an element of visceral horror might be the intersection where my favorite horror stories lie. There's something about hearing these old words read out loud (by Hannibal Hills, no less) that makes me shiver, even just thinking about it. I enjoyed this one from top to bottom and Hannibal Hills is always worth listening to. 10/10 would recommend to any horror lovers, especially lovers of classic horror!

Creepy Fun

The story follows a protagonist who is delightfully awful. More than just a creature feature it's a character study that let's you sit in the mind of a self-centered manipulator as he gets closer and closer to his comeuppance.

The worms themselves are creepy and made me a bit squeamish. They're a presence beneath the surface and serve as a metaphor for a supposedly idyllic Norfolk country side where below the surface everyone has a touch of evil.

it's worth giving this hidden gem a listen.
