Publisher's summary

In the dead of winter, handwriting expert Claudia Rose journeys to Maine to retrieve a manuscript about convicted female serial killer, Roxanne Becker. The manuscript, written by Professor Madeleine Maynard, who was, herself, brutally murdered, exposes a shocking secret: explosive research about a group of mentally unstable grad students selected for a special project and dubbed “Maynard’s Maniacs”. Was Madeleine conducting research that was at best, unprofessional - and at worst, downright harmful and potentially dangerous? Could that unorthodox research have turned deadly?

Claudia finds herself swept up in the mystery of Madeleine’s life - and death. But Claudia soon realizes that Madeleine left behind more questions than answers, and no shortage of suspects. The professor’s personal life yields a number of persons who might have wanted her dead, and her academic success and personal fortune clearly made her the envy of fellow faculty members.

The university anticipates being the beneficiary of Madeline’s estate but that seems in question when a charming stranger, claiming to be Madeleine’s nephew, turns up brandishing a new will. The local police chief prevails upon Claudia to travel into town to examine the newly produced, handwritten will. Rushing back to Madeleine’s isolated house to escape an impending storm, Claudia becomes trapped in a blizzard. With a killer.

Perfect audio book

"Written Off" is a book I listened to when I started exercising. Every day I would walk further because I wanted to know what Claudia Rose had gotten herself into from one moment to the next. It was just too difficult to stop listening, so on I walked. There were times the depth of the storyline, regarding a female serial killer, named Roxie made me gasp or even tear up because her interview and background were jaw dropping.
The descriptions about the characters and their handwritings were specific, and fascinating, very detailed. Throughout the entire story I tried to guess which direction it would take, and I was surprised every time.
Sheila Lowe's ability to pull the reader right into Claudia's adventures makes me absolutely certain I will be buying her next audiobook, ASAP. It must be said, Lowe knows how to tell one heck of an engrossing story.

LOVED IT

I loved this book. This book kept me entertained through out the story. I love the way Claudia can look at a persons handwriting and tell a lot about the person. This book, as well as the series is definitely worth the money or credit. I recommend this book as well as the series. I as gifted this book at my request in exchange for an honest review. The narrator does a great job as well.

All the elements of a good Mystery.

This Audio Book is a hybrid of a Mystery and thriller with suspense and a glimpse into handwriting analysis.

This field requires a basic understanding of the psychology of the individual you are examining, so the Writer can create
a different view of the characters being observed. It makes for an entertaining and interesting read.

The Narrator the key to any good Audio Book gives a great performance.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Intriquing AND Educational

Once again, Sheila Lowe, has woven an intriguing story with great insights on handwriting analysis. There are a couple of unexpected twists that will keep you guessing, "Who did it?".

This audio book kept my attention the whole time. It is well worth the listen (or read). Prepare to be entertained!

Cozy up to a good mystery!

I have been enjoying the various tales in this series, in random order, largely from the back. This one filled in a chunk or two from some of the later stories but only in terms of continuity of the total story arc, not in terms of plot or completeness within any of the novels. Meaning each stands alone, which is good if you happen to be reading randomly.

Our heroine, Claudia Rose, a leading expert in the science of graphology, solves crimes and unravels complex situations. Okay, that description applies to the whole series.

This story takes place in Maine and the narrator (audio), Anna Crowe, has fun with a Down East accent. Presented with a complex maze of emotions and history and conflicts, each person reacts differently to circumstances. Thus two people can have identical-seeming handwriting but, nature versus nurture coming into play, one may be able to handle things that the other cannot. I don't want to really say more, to avoid spoilers, but the tale is delightfully enjoyable. Cozy up to a good mystery!

A Cold Winter Night's Entertainment

This is my first Sheila Lowe book and I was really impressed. I loved the idea of a handwriting specialist, and thought it would be a breezy read. I found it darker and more complex and yes, scarier, than expected and I loved that. A likable, believable and intrepid heroine, well-developed secondary characters, wonderfully atmospheric setting, and expert plotting. And the narration was a perfect match, with Anna Crowe giving effortlessly distinct character voices when called for and otherwise disappearing (in a good way) into the story. Oh -- and I learned stuff about handwriting analysis that made me want to have my own handwriting analyzed. 😃 I'm now going shopping for the earlier books in the series.

My First Forensic Handwriting!

This book was enjoyable, as it was my first Forensic Handwriting story I was unsure how it was going to be. I was pleasantly surprised it was quite good. Solid mystery with some twists and turns. I love winter isolation mysteries so that was an added bonus. I would be interested in listening to others in the series and overall have no complaints other than it wrapped up on the quick side. The narration was great, and I look forward to more. I received a free review copy of this book at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you!
