About this listen

Of number-one New York Times best-selling author Sue Grafton, NPR's Maureen Corrigan said, "Makes me wish there were more than 26 letters." With only two letters left, Grafton's many devoted readers and listeners will share that sentiment.

X: The number ten. An unknown quantity. A mistake. A cross. A kiss.

X: The shortest entry in Webster's Unabridged. Derived from Greek and Latin and commonly found in science, medicine, and religion. The most graphically dramatic letter. Notoriously tricky to pronounce: think xylophone.

X: The 24th letter in the English alphabet.

Sue Grafton's X: Perhaps her darkest and most chilling novel, it features a remorseless serial killer who leaves no traces of his crimes. Once again breaking the rules and establishing new paths, Grafton wastes little time identifying this sociopath. The test is whether Kinsey can prove her case against him before she becomes his next victim.

Critic reviews

“Grafton’s endless resourcefulness in varying her pitches in this landmark series, graced by her trademark self-deprecating humor, is one of the seven wonders of the genre.” (Kirkus Reviews [starred review])

“Excellent...pulse-pounding...Grafton has never been better.” (Booklist [starred review])

“I’m going to miss Kinsey Millhone. Ever since the first of Sue Grafton’s Alphabet mysteries, A Is for Alibi, came out in 1982, Kinsey has been a good friend and the very model of an independent woman, a gutsy Californian P.I. rocking a traditional man’s job...it’s Kinsey herself who keeps this series so warm and welcoming. She’s smart, she’s resourceful, and she’s tough enough to be sensitive on the right occasions.” (New York Times Book Review)

Love Kinsey yet story dragged

I really like the Kinsey Milhone stories, yet this one took too long to develop and made it seem as if Kinsey couldn't put it all together.

Hard to follow

What did you like best about X: Kinsey Millhone, Book 24? What did you like least?

I listen for a couple of hours every day. I usually have no trouble following a plot, but this one was very difficult for me to follow. I don't know if it was the story or the narrator, but I recommend you read this book rather than listening.

Has X: Kinsey Millhone, Book 24 turned you off from other books in this genre?

I have read or listened to all of the other Milhone books. This one was hard to follow on Audible.

RIP SUE & Thank You

Another Sue Grafton Winner. A-X for me have been spectacular. Lindsey M. is such a witty, realist, honest & compassionate character who seems to battles her inner self as much as the bad guys.
She is lovable & fearless.
I have enjoyed all these books & always after finishing a book felt eager during Sue's process to complete & publish the next letter.

Enjoyable listen

I have read a few from this series, and enjoyed them. This is my first of the audiobooks from the series. It’s a good story. The narrator did a great job with different inflections and voices for different characters. However, it did bother me a bit that Kinsey is supposed to be 38, but the narrator sounds like a 60 year old smoker.

Vintage Grafton

Judy Kaye did a great job of capturing the wit, charm, and determined spirit of Kinsey. I HATE that we are nearing the end of the alphabet...this was another interesting case with its unexpected connections and colorful characters.

I've been ripped off!

At the book's end I hear "This ABRIDGED book was performed by"...I PAID FOR UNABRIDGED!
I have gone back and checked both the audio and my purchase. At times the book wasn't making sense, but I thought it was because I was stopping and starting hours or days later. Now I find out it was because it was abridged- shortened. I'm ticked! Good story, wish I would have heard it all!
