Publisher's summary

The Abe clan and its allies are in full rebellion. When the Emperor's greatest military leader, Yoshii, is targeted for assassination by magic, it is up to the newly sober Lord Yamada and his exorcist associate Kenji to keep the young man alive long enough to put down the uprising before the entire country is consumed by war. Yamada knows how to deal with demons, monsters, and angry ghosts, but the greatest threat of all is one final assassin, hidden in a place where no one - especially Lord Yamada - would ever think to look.

Brilliant

I have come to enjoy the Yamada series thus far and when I dove into this book it took my imagination for a joy ride! It's rare I feel things for characters in a book, but the writing and the narrator did a damn good job at pulling me in. I can't wait to start the next book.

Excellent!

I’ve listened to this book many times. It never gets old. I love the insights into Yamada-san and Kenji.

Best in the series

I started this series to here Brian Nishii narrate somthing orher than "The Story of Sushi" which I liked his performance in. The first book in the series was a bit cliché on some levels and the short story setup was good for my hour rides to work but bad for story development. Still I liked it for the Japanese themes and interesting main character. The second book seemed a bit like the author had stepped out of his element by making one whole book that stuck with one story. The repeat of one of the short stories from the first book as the opening chapter kinda felt like cheating but I did like the second book more than the first. This book was fantastic, Richard Parks writing is sharper than ever. Plot twists can be seen but played out with with suspense. The visuals more vivid. The characters more dear. While I did like the other books in the series this one will stick with me alot longer.

Unexpected Conclusion

I love this series for various reasons - not the least of which is the mythology and folklore woven into the books. Another thing I love about this particular book is that I did not see the ending coming - Rie’s fate was very original and I love how Lord Yamada’s fortunes were changed. I look forward to the next book.

Hachiman Taro

This is by far my favorite of the Yamada books. Though I feel like it has less to do with Yokai than the other's, the progression of Lord Yamada's character more than makes up for it. The weaving of his Lord Yamada into the The Later Three Years' War was absolutely fantastic! As soon as this book finished, I started it over to pick n the things that I may have missed out on. Definitely worth the purchase!

Did not enjoy it as much as other stories n series

While there were some solid parts to this installment I preferred the first two books over this one. Still solid listen though
