Publisher's summary

Law professor James J. Duane became a viral sensation thanks to a 2008 lecture outlining the reasons why you should never agree to answer questions from the police - especially if you are innocent and wish to stay out of trouble with the law. In this timely, relevant, and pragmatic new book, he expands on that presentation, offering a vigorous defense of every citizen's constitutionally protected right to avoid self-incrimination. Getting a lawyer is not only the best policy, Professor Duane argues, it's also the advice law-enforcement professionals give their own kids.

Using actual case histories of innocent men and women exonerated after decades in prison because of information they voluntarily gave to police, Professor Duane demonstrates the critical importance of a constitutional right not well or widely understood by the average American. Reflecting the most recent attitudes of the Supreme Court, Professor Duane argues that it is now even easier for police to use your own words against you. This lively and informative guide explains what everyone needs to know to protect themselves and those they love.

One of the most important books ever written.

I applaud Mr. Duane for the effort he put into understanding the real, rubber-meets-the-road, situation with our justice system. He remains respectful of police, while educating civilians on how do deal with them.

It is TRULY tragic that such a book is required, but in the face of reality, every American citizen and permanent resident should read this book.

Justice System?

There is no "justice"in a system this corrupt. The police, judges, and prosecutors all suck.

Very well presented.

Short, sweet, concise & pertinent information. In the current climate of "thought crime's", this is almost mandatory reading for U.S. citizens IMHO. Delivered in a fast enough cadence to solicit rapt attention complete with knowledgeable narration.

Everyone should read this book!

Scary but true. Scary to think of all the innocent people who get arrested and convicted because of ignorance and poor malice

Professor Duane speaks a lot slower than his YouTube video but he's just as informative. I look forward to more books from him!!!

The best advice a lawyer can give

The best advice a lawyer can give, having watch most to videos put out by the author. I found that regardless it now or later. Having the knowledge now may save a lot damage control for the lawyer later should someone be invited the other interview room for a discussion. Simple politely stating that a lawyer is required before going any further. Or if this is not enough, to more especially if the you not free to leave then assume your under arrest will means they trying get you waive your constitutional rights. Firmly assert you fifth and sixth amendment right - Charge me and get me a Lawyer Now or release me Now! Great book great and great advise. Lucky for me (knock on wood), I have never needed the services of lawyer. Yet!

not read as fast as YouTube videos

I was thinking I would have to play at .75x speed but the author spoke normally, which was weird at first, then got used to it.

To be honest, he does go into more details about people who spoke and got made but not as much detail as say other books that look at social events. The premise is pretty simple, don't answer questions to cops under any reason and tell them you want a lawyer.

For that, the book lays out it support in a lot of detail and iterates the main point that under no circumstances do you say anything to any Federal or state authority without a lawyer present.

Less than 3 hours may both seem like too short and not a lot of time but it gets the point across to where you'll remember the message.

A must read for EVERYONE

Less than 3 hours of your time reading/listening to could save you months or years if you're in the "wrong" situation. I don't like to "should on" anyone, but you should read this book, read it with your kids, spread the word. The author reads it and is get articulate, and you can tell he is passionate about the subject. I was never bored while listening to this on a long commute, it only took two drives to finish listening. Highly recommend this for everyone. Helpful information with plenty of case studies.

This book is a LIFESAVER!!

It made me realize that if the police ever took me into custody before I read this book I would have Surly given evidence or made statements that would have incriminated myself. This book taught me that the police can lie to you and anything they say to you could very well be a lie. If the police are questioning you about a crime that you know you did not commit, they can very well say that they have you on camera committing this crime and if you confess they might go easier on you, crazy right? I am now trying to get everybody I know to read this book because they could very well save their life!!
