About this listen

The end of residency isn’t the utopia you might have imagined.

You know what to do with the medical stuff, but what about navigating private practice, unfamiliar hospitals, and—patients!

In this collection of absurd moments, practical advice, and humorous tales from the medical trenches, Dr. John Chase shares stories from his forty years as an orthopedic surgeon and offers insight into how to be successful, have fun, and take care of patients without missing out on what really matters in life.

This is the perfect, entertaining, and quick book for medical students, those in the medical field, and people who want an insight into the humorous side of how doctors think.

So funny and heartwarming. It should be a mandatory read for all medical students. Wish the author had been one of my doctors.

Love this book

Having just retired as an OR nurse for 50 years; Dr Chase made me feel I was back in the surgical world.

As a former medical practice manager I wish more potential doctors would listen to this book. He was an exceptional to the rule about doctors I worked with. Not as humorous as I had hoped, but insightful.

Interesting retrospective on career in medicine

I enjoyed the book. Just an honest look into the life of a surgeon…. Told without vulgarity, which seems like today is what most people seem to think makes it a “good” book.

Thanks, Dr Chase for sharing your experiences in your life as a surgeon. Good job! God bless you, Sir.

Very good

would not finish. Rude. fatphobic. seems like a provider who rather look down on patients then help them. we all encounter high bmis and drug seeking and people of limited education in medicine. no need to make a book speaking rudely about them. not funny

don't bother

I finished and did enjoy it but it was written for doctors and not the general public.

Highly recommend reading this well written book. The journey to become a Dr and Surgeon was wonderful. I worked in hospitals for 30 years as xray & Nuclear Med tech. Hard to find a great Doctor who also cares about each of his patients. A must read for anyone going into any part of the Medical field.

Excellent story!!

This review is from John Chase-the author. I will let you all decide the merits of the book itself. After listening to an Audible book every month for 20 years, I identified Mr Pinchot as my favorite reader for his ability to portray the emotion of the situation and that is why I wanted him to narrate my book when I wrote it.
He nailed it! He made this book better than I had hoped for with his performance

The performance by Bronson Pinchot is fabulous!

As a nurse of 50 years, I could relive many similar situations while listening to this book. Some funny. Some not. The book title captures so much of life in the medical field. A family friend suffered consequences of stress as a physician so I chose nursing and glad I did. I've had experience in many settings and many fields and benefited from them all. Kudos to Dr Chase for sharing his journey.
