• Episode 60: Normalizing the Grief Journey with Dr. Serign
    Apr 21 2025
In this episode with Dr. Serign Marong, we discuss the often-overlooked experience of grief, particularly within men and communities of color. Dr. Serign shares his journey of losing his wife suddenly while raising two young children and how that loss reshaped his life and work. We explore the importance of embracing sorrow as love, the impact of avoidance, and how healing begins when we stop running from pain. We also touch on legacy, fatherhood, and the unpredictability of grief. Tune in for an inspiring conversation that reminds us that while grief may take many forms, healing often comes in unexpected ways. Key Takeaways: Grief Cannot Be Compared – Everyone's grief is unique, and it’s icmportant not to compare losses. The emotional reaction to grief can be intense regardless of the situation, and it's okay to feel deeply no matter the cause of loss. The Grieving Process Starts Later – For many, the true grieving process doesn’t begin immediately after a loss. Initially, people may be in survival mode, functioning on autopilot, and only later, when the distraction of logistics fades, does the full weight of grief set in. Avoidance is Part of the Journey – Trying to avoid pain or difficult emotions is natural. Grief can make you want to escape, but it’s a step in the process of healing, even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time. Facing Grief is Necessary for Healing – While avoiding pain might feel like the easiest way to cope, eventually, you have to face it. Healing starts when you allow yourself to feel and process the grief. Legacy and Purpose Matter – Thinking about the future and your legacy can help you find motivation to keep going. In this case, thinking about what kind of story your kids would tell about you made all the difference in pushing through the pain. Grief is a Journey – Grief doesn’t have an endpoint. It’s a journey that evolves over time. You might feel differently about your grief at different stages, and that’s okay. It’s important to acknowledge that you’re changing along with the process. Helpful Resource: Grief Doesn't Follow a Set Timeline – Grief doesn’t follow a specific schedule. You may not be “over it” at the expected time, and that’s okay. Everyone’s healing journey is different. Normalizing the Grief Process –Grief is personal, and there’s no “right” way to grieve. It’s important to normalize the experience of grieving and allow people to grieve in their own time and manner. Support and Connection in Healing – Healing often comes when we’re surrounded by people who understand. Sometimes you can’t see it at the moment, but other people’s support, even when it’s hard to accept, helps you heal. Notable Highlights: "Everybody’s gonna have a different experience and I don’t think it can be controlled. It’s just going to be what it is and you have to adjust to that." "Loss can look like many things: losing a spouse, family members, divorce, jobs, even a license. There are different levels of grief." "Grief is a survival mode for a while, and then something happens that flips the switch, and that’s when the grief journey begins." "Divorce is definitely grief. It’s not losing the person you love, but it’s losing a life you had planned." "Grief is just love with nowhere to go." About Dr. Serign Marong Dr. Serign Marong is a board-certified family physician, grief advocate, and storyteller who transforms loss into healing. After the sudden passing of his wife in 2014, he stepped away from medicine to navigate deep grief and rebuild his life. • Episode 59: Moving the Needle: Distinguishing Urgency, Priority and Importance
    Apr 14 2025

In this episode, I break down the difference between priority and importance—two concepts that often get mixed up but play a crucial role in how we manage our time and energy. I walk through a simple framework to help distinguish between what demands immediate attention and what can wait, so you can stop feeling overwhelmed and start making intentional choices. Tune in to learn how to structure your priorities in a way that aligns with your values—and finally stop letting urgency run the show.

    Key Takeaways:

Urgent and Important: Must-Do Tasks - Some tasks require immediate action because they have deadlines and significant consequences. These should always come first, as delaying them can lead to major disruptions.

Urgent but Not Important: The Things That Feel Pressing but Aren’t Essential - Some tasks create a sense of urgency but don’t contribute much to long-term goals. They may feel necessary at the moment, but completing them shouldn’t come at the expense of more meaningful priorities.

Important but Not Urgent: The Things That Shape Your Future - Some priorities don’t come with immediate deadlines, yet they have a lasting impact. These are the investments that shape personal growth, well-being, and long-term success. While they often get pushed aside, making time for them before they become urgent prevents unnecessary stress.

Neither Urgent Nor Important: The Distractions That Steal Your Time - Some activities neither add real value nor require immediate attention, yet they quietly consume time. Identifying and minimizing these can create space for what truly matters.

Are You Truly Prioritizing What Matters?

What people claim is important is not always reflected in how they spend their time. Without intentional focus, meaningful priorities can be neglected until urgency forces action. True prioritization means addressing what truly deserves attention before it becomes a crisis.

  • Episode 58: Women, Money and Medicine - Smart Strategies for Women in Medicine with Ashaunda Davis
    Apr 7 2025
In this episode, we break the silence around money and the emotional weight it carries, especially for high-achieving women. We explore the cycle of financial ups and downs, the shame tied to money missteps, and the importance of shifting mindsets for long-term success. Tune in as we discuss the power of financial accountability, the impact of deep-seated beliefs, and the steps to gaining confidence and control over your finances. Key Takeaways: If You Don’t See It, Be It – When the guidance you need isn’t available, you have the power to create it. Too often, financial spaces overlook women, especially Black women, leaving them unheard and underserved. But instead of accepting the gap, we can fill it—becoming the advisors, mentors, and leaders we once searched for. Breaking Free from Limiting Beliefs – Money stress isn’t just about debt—it’s shaped by workplace inequities, family pressures, and childhood messages about wealth. Many women carry silent burdens, but true financial freedom begins with shifting the mindset, challenging old beliefs, and claiming what we deserve. Turning Income into Lasting Wealth – Generational financial trauma is real, but we can’t stay stuck in it. High earnings don’t equal wealth—they’re just a tool for building it. True financial success starts with mindset: recognizing limiting beliefs, leaning into empowering ones, and making intentional choices that turn income into lasting wealth. Why Talking About Money Matters - Money shame is real, even for high-achieving professionals, but staying silent only gives it more power. Like mental health, normalizing financial conversations helps break free from guilt and fear. True wealth starts with reshaping beliefs, asking the right questions, and gaining the confidence to take control of your finances. Taking Control of Your Wealth Starts with Your Mindset - True empowerment comes from realizing that while we can't control everything, we can control our mindset, learning, and the people we surround ourselves with. Growth happens when we engage in the right conversations with those who genuinely want to see us win—whether in life, business, or finances. Helpful Resources: Building Wealth with Smart Investments – Wealth isn’t about appearances; it’s about strategy. Maximize your 401(k), explore solo plans if self-employed, and balance risk with secure investments. Wealth isn’t just about earning—it’s about making strategic moves that secure your future. The Purposeful Spending Plan – A Purposeful Spending Plan (PSP) ensures that your money works for you, not the other way around. It’s not about restriction—it’s about balance. Too often, high earners find themselves living paycheck to paycheck because income alone doesn’t create wealth—intentional money management does. Why Financial Checkups Matter - Financial well-being is a key part of overall wellness, just like physical and mental health. We schedule regular doctor visits, yet many avoid financial checkups due to fear, shame, or the belief that high earners should automatically be good with money. But money management is about habits, not income. • Episode 57: Behind Difficult Conversations Part 2: From Conflict to Courageous Collaboration
    Mar 31 2025

In this episode, we continue our exploration of difficult conversations—this time, moving from conflict to courageous collaboration. We break down the stages of conflict, the power of self-awareness, and the role of courageous conversations in restoring relationships. Tune in to learn how embracing discomfort can lead to deeper connections and lasting change.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Difficult Conversations Are Not Always Calm - Many people believe that resolving conflict requires calm, emotionless discussions. In reality, conflict often involves emotional highs and lows. It’s normal for conversations to escalate before resolution happens.
    • Understanding Your Conflict Style - People handle conflict differently—some react immediately, while others need time to process before responding. Recognizing your style can help you navigate disagreements more effectively.
    • Unspoken Feelings Can Lead to Escalation - Holding in emotions instead of addressing them can intensify conflict. In this case, withdrawing created distance between two colleagues until it was finally confronted. Naming emotions early can prevent misunderstandings.
    • Restoration Comes After Resolution - The final stage of conflict is healing. Once both parties feel heard and understood, trust can be rebuilt. This process takes time but strengthens relationships in the long run.

    Helpful Resources:

    • Turning Points Lead to Resolution - Sometimes, an outside perspective can shift how we see a situation. Reflection helps soften our approach and makes room for healing conversations.
    • Courageous Conversations Require Responsibility - Owning your part in a conflict, without excuses, builds trust. The “five-step apology” framework—acknowledging impact, expressing understanding, sharing your feelings, stating your commitment, and defining boundaries—can lead to real resolution.

    Notable Highlights:

    "Conflict has an escalation phase.”

"Taking responsibility for your contribution to a conflict, without excessive justification or excuses, is a courageous step toward resolution."

"Conflict can shift into collaboration when both parties recognize each other’s lived experiences and start discussing the future instead of dwelling on the past."

"Once resolution happens, healing can begin."

"The climax of conflict isn’t always a big blowout. It can be a series of tense conversations until something shifts."

"Compromise and resolution conversations are what restore trust and safety in relationships over time."

"In high stress, we often default to survival responses from our past trauma and upbringing—no matter how much work we’ve done on ourselves."

"We must have compassion for ourselves when we fall into survival responses. We are not perfect; we are human."

"Even when harm is done, it can be mended. It takes courage and a willingness to be responsible for one’s actions."

"At least one person must step up and lean into discomfort for resolution to happen."

  • Episode 56: Love, Hope, and Joy as Resistance with Jasmine Bellamy
    Mar 24 2025
In this episode, I sit down with a familiar face to talk about the power of love, connection, and community in uncertain times. We discuss how fear and anxiety can disconnect us, and why cultivating a non-anxious presence is an act of love and leadership. Through the Loving Leader framework—Listening, Openness, Vulnerability, Inner work, Nurturing, and recognizing the Gift in others—we explore what it truly means to lead with love, in life and in the workplace. Tune in as we unpack how embracing our gifts, fostering psychological safety, and living in alignment can create spaces where we all thrive. Key Takeaways: The Power of Love and Community - Life is not meant to be lived alone. We are built for connection, for love, and for being part of a supportive community. In times of fear and uncertainty, it can feel natural to withdraw, but true strength comes from leaning into love and relationships. Thinking with the Heart - True wisdom isn’t just about thinking—it’s about integrating the heart, mind, and body. For too long, we’ve been conditioned to rely solely on intellect, acting as “walking heads” disconnected from our emotions. But real understanding comes from wholeness. The Loving Leader Framework - Leading with love means creating spaces where people can thrive. The Loving Leader Framework guides us in this mission: Listening deeply, staying Open in heart and mind, embracing Vulnerability, doing Inner work, Nurturing safe spaces, and Giving honor to others’ gifts. Love Over Shame - Healing begins with naming our reality, even when we'd rather avoid it. Shame isolates, but love is greater than fear, hurt, or doubt. When we commit to healing, we make space for life beyond pain, even when we can’t yet see it. Love, Boundaries, and Capacity - Just as the oil in the biblical story flowed only when there was space to receive it, our capacity grows when we make room for healing, presence, and grace. Receiving is just as vital as giving—allowing us to pour from a place of abundance, not depletion. Feelings Are Data – Emotions are information, guiding us toward healing and clarity. Instead of dismissing them, we can see them as tools for self-discovery. Inner work is a privilege—an invitation to know and honor your true self. Helpful Resources: Emotional Awareness Creates Choice – Understanding both negative and positive emotions deepens self-awareness. Noticing how emotions feel in the body—whether anger, joy, or anticipation—helps discern whether you're moving toward or away from your values. Depositing Joy – Joy is found in small, meaningful moments—like receiving a gifted scarf with a rich story. Naming and savoring these moments builds a "joy bank," a reserve of reminders that love and connection are transformative. Choosing Love Over Fear – Fear may linger, but love, joy, and connection thrive with intention. While stress hormones stay in our system longer, the effects of love and hope fade faster—calling us to seek them out, again and again. Love is the resistance, the remedy, and the way forward. • Episode 55: Behind False Assumptions: The Dangers of Reckless Thinking
    Mar 17 2025

In this episode, I talk about how assumptions shape our thoughts and actions. I break down two key types—assuming authority and assuming intent—and how they can lead to misunderstandings and poor decisions. From social media to daily life, I share why it’s important to pause, clarify, and think before jumping to conclusions. Tune in as we get to the root cause of why we make assumptions and how we can shift our mindset to build better, more thoughtful connections.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Question Your Assumptions - Our brains automatically make assumptions to process information quickly, but unchecked assumptions can lead to reckless and even dangerous thinking.
    • Expand Your Awareness - Paying attention to body language, tone, and emotional shifts can reveal deeper meanings. Developing "listening intelligence" helps us recognize when clarification is needed, preventing unnecessary tension in personal and professional relationships.
    • Pause Before Reacting - Our emotions can hijack rational thinking, especially when past experiences shape our assumptions. Before reacting, take a moment to assess: Am I responding based on fact or feeling? Practicing emotional awareness allows for more thoughtful and constructive conversations.
    • Assumption of Authority – Believing something is true just because it comes from a seemingly credible source, like a social media post or a person in a leadership role. Without verifying the context or source, misinformation spreads like a game of telephone.
    • Assumption of Intent – The assumption of intent happens when we believe we know why someone said or did something—without asking them. Instead of clarifying their true motives, we assign meaning based on our personal experiences, emotions, or biases.

    Helpful Resources:

    • Verify Sources, Check Facts - Not everything we hear or read is true, and blindly accepting information can lead to spreading misinformation or making poor decisions. Before reacting, it’s important to consider the credibility of the source, cross-check facts, and seek additional perspectives. Taking the time to verify information ensures that our beliefs and actions are based on truth rather than hearsay or manipulation.
    • Improve Communication, Prevent False Assumptions - Good communication is not just about speaking; it’s about listening with the intent to understand rather than just to respond. Practicing active listening, managing emotions, and asking thoughtful questions can help prevent misunderstandings and foster better relationships.

    Notable Highlights:

“Without clarification and verification, a message can get wildly distorted.”

“Recognizing that we're always assuming is the first step because our brain is constantly building stories and meaning.”

“When we start to lean into clarifying conversations, we mitigate so much harm in our communication and interactions.”

“We never know what kind of day a person is having until we interact with them and clarify and verify.”

  • Episode 54: Connection in the Workplace - 4 Principles of Connection with Jason Cochran
    Mar 10 2025
In this episode, Dr. Maiysha sits down with organizational psychologist and workplace culture expert Jason Cochran to explore the 4 Principles of Connection—a powerful framework for creating healthier, more fulfilling work environments. They discuss how workplace culture impacts mental health, why toxic work environments have reached a public health crisis level, and how leaders can design work experiences that prioritize well-being, trust, and engagement. Tune in to learn how to shift from burnout culture to conscious leadership and create organizations where people thrive. Key Takeaways The Hidden Crisis of Workplace Burnout - Burnout, stress, and toxic work environments are no longer just individual issues—they have become a public health concern. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has acknowledged the urgent need to address these problems. The 4 Principles of Connection at Work - To create a workplace where people feel engaged and fulfilled, organizations must design for connection in four key ways: Connection to Self – Helping employees develop self-awareness and align their work with their strengths and values. Connection to Others – Building trust, safety, and authentic relationships within teams. Connection to Role – Ensuring employees are in positions that energize them and align with their skills. Connection to Organization – Creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose within the company. The Future of Work: Conscious Capitalism - The traditional workplace model often prioritizes profit over people. Conscious capitalism shifts the focus to creating sustainable success by valuing both business outcomes and employee well-being. How Leaders Can Design Better Work Environments - By applying human-centered design, leaders can transform their organizations into places where people feel seen, heard, and valued—resulting in higher job satisfaction, productivity, and retention. Helpful Resources How Psychological Safety Impacts Performance - When employees feel safe, respected, and valued, they take more risks, contribute innovative ideas, and feel greater job satisfaction. The Cost of Ignoring Workplace Well-Being - High turnover, low engagement, and burnout do not just affect employees—they cost companies millions in lost productivity and hiring expenses. Coaching for Leadership and Workplace Transformation - External coaching helps leaders develop the skills to foster connection, engagement, and high-performing teams. Notable Highlights "One of the happiest things in life that can happen to a human being is when they work somewhere that cares about their 5 to 9 as much as their 9 to 5." – Jason Cochran "The way you build trust as an organization is not by telling people to trust you—it is by showing up for them first." "Toxic work cultures have reached epidemiological levels. If we do not shift how we design work, we will not have enough healthcare professionals, educators, or frontline workers to meet demand." "Great leadership is not about control—it is about creating an environment where people feel safe, valued, and inspired to contribute their best work." About Jason Cochran Jason Cochran is a licensed psychologist of 15+ years and the co-founder of human-centered technology companies iAspire and Dulead in Indianapolis. Fascinated with the exploration of human potential, Jason’s work has been to build scalable solutions that attract, develop, and retain talent. • Episode 53: Behind Psychological Manipulation - Protecting Your Mind's Focus
    Mar 3 2025

In this episode, I’m talking about protecting your focus in a world full of distractions. From social media noise to psychological manipulation, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. I’ll share practical ways to recognize distractions, quiet the noise, and stay present through mindfulness, movement, and intentional joy. Tune in to take back control of your attention and show up fully for what truly matters.

    Key Takeaways:

The Overload of Information - The constant flood of news, social media, and political updates can be overwhelming. It’s easy to feel consumed by headlines, debates, and opinions. When we are surrounded by so much noise, it becomes harder to stay focused on what truly matters.

Recognizing Distractions for What They Are - Not everything we consume is valuable information. Some of it is designed to distract or even manipulate us. It’s important to step back and ask: Is this helping me grow, or is it wearing me down? Recognizing distractions is the first step to regaining control.

Finding Your Role and Influence - When faced with overwhelming issues, it’s easy to feel powerless. But we all have a role to play within our own circles. Instead of trying to fix everything, focus on what you can do—whether in your work, family, or community. Small actions create meaningful change.

The Power of Community - Surrounding yourself with supportive people is key. A strong community uplifts, reminds you of your worth, and helps you stay grounded. Whether at work, home, or in the world at large, having the right people around you makes all the difference.

    Helpful Resources:

    • Turning Down the Volume - One of the best ways to protect our peace is to limit our exposure to unnecessary noise. This might mean reducing social media use, choosing only a few reliable news sources, or stepping away from conversations that drain our energy. Less noise means more clarity.
    • Creating a Focused Routine - Establishing daily habits helps strengthen our mental resilience. This could be meditation, exercise, reading, or even listening to music—anything that brings calm and stability. Intentional practices like gratitude, laughter, and play can serve as resistance against the negativity that surrounds us.
