  • Summary

  • New Brunswick is the location for today's destination. St. Andrews By The Sea is a quiet and quaint seaside community near the U.S border in Maine. The small town was the centre of justice, local government and professional services for Charlotte County, including the Fundy Isles. Among the picturesque homes is a a small grassy hill. That is where you’ll find the Charlotte County Gaol Provincial Historic Site. It is adjacent to the white Charlotte County Court House which is a well preserved mid-nineteenth century Maritime courthouse sits a hard granite building with a dark exterior and metal bar windows. The jail on the other hand is a cold and ominous-looking structure meant to keep people in while terrifying all who gaze upon it. It is in stark contrast to what was once the centre of community activities such as elections, fairs, parades, and official visits. It is also where from 1867 to 1957, twenty-six men were executed including Tom Roland Hutchings who it is believed still haunts the cell he once inhabited.
