  • Changing the Game: Genes and Mental Health Medication
    Jan 29 2023

On this episode I speak with Ryan Griggs, Medical Science Liaison and Gene Expert with GeneSight a medical company that is changing the way doctors and their patients navigate the mental health medication journey. Ryan explains how the GeneSight test is administered and the way in which medical professionals and patients review the test findings. The genetic test provides a customized guide to which medications may work better for patients and which ones genetically speaking might want to be avoided. The test allows for less trail and error which is often the case when individuals take medication for the first time or need to switch medicine. You can ask your medical provider for the GeneSight test and they can administer the super easy test or provide you with the test to take at home. A simple cheek swab could provide you with a plethora of information you didn't even think was possible.

  • To Write Love On Her Arms with Bri Hagins
    Nov 8 2022

⚠️ CONTENT WARNING: This episode discusses self harm and suicidal ideation, please listen with care. ⚠️

On this episode, I speak with Bri Hagins, the Find Help Manager at To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA). TWLOHA's mission is to let people know that hope is real and that they can get the help they deserve. Bri shares her mental health journey and how she found TWLOHA. Bri's role in TWLOHA is to connect individuals with mental and physical healthcare providers to begin the healing process. We had a great time talking about our test anxiety and napping as self care, but how it can also be a sign that we are entering a depression.

Off mic Bri shared with me a piece of advice her therapist offered. Challenge yourself to stop saying my anxiety or my depression. You weren't meant to have this, it's not yours, it's just anxiety or depression. This stuck with me and I am actively trying to follow that advice. When Bri and I have a check-in we'll see how I did with the challenge.
