James Ellroy is classic literature in crime reporting

Many of these stories are from his book crime wave which is a collection of his reportage on known and little known crimes in Los Angeles. I have been a fan and a James Ellroy for the past 30 years. His stuff really transports me back to the times he’s writing about. If you want a good taste of interesting crime stories All written in an exciting and stylistic way look no further than the demon dog.

Get the Rythym

I'm only a few shows in but I really like this podcast. At first the subs effects were distracting, and I thought it to be a very messy tale. I continued listening to the stories and became more accustomed to the style.

Now I'm binge listening. My only issue is my brain doesn't work as fast as it used to, so a little bit more space after sentences would be nice. I think that's it. Sometimes things are just too close together and I have to go back 30 seconds and relisten. The sound effects are sometimes distracting but also sometimes it really adds value.

The stories and processes are very interesting. and I love Mr. Ellwood's voice. If it was just a little bit more slower I would give it a five across the board.

Kept the obligatory preaching to a minimum

There wasn't as much gratuitous virtue signaling as might have been expected. There was some unnecessary political whining and woke scolding, but there were a lot of thought provoking facts that made up for it. Four stars for keeping that waste of time to a minimum and only four stars for dragging it in in the first place.

Excellent overall

Very well done. Some of the victim sound effects were a bit gratuitous for sure, but this is James Ellroy. You’ve got to expect some excess. I didn’t have any problem following the details as some has stated. I thought the last episode dealing with a potential perp was chilling and really well done.
I listened to My Dark Places and really enjoyed it. So, if you liked this podcast, give it a listen while we await season 2!!! I’m looking forward to it.

Noir Stories Told by a Master Storyteller

Old cases as dark as the space between the stars. The details are right from the cops or the case files. His personal involvement in one case makes the rest very real.

Good, but not for everyone.

It’s James Ellroy, it’s not for everyone. It’s misogynistic, vulgar, disgusting, and gross; and Ellroy is a total creep. But it’s very entertaining. If you like his novels, you will like this.

I’m on the fence about sound effects and background noise and music in podcasts. Sometimes it’s terrible, but I think it works well here.

Crime Noir

Reading the reviews, this is apparently not for some. I happen to love the old-timey crime noir feel to it. It’s like I’m walking back in time.

Noir for sure

The stories were solid and the delivery as expected. James Ellroy's (to some) over the top noir is delivered perfectly. If you enjoy noir movies, you'll enjoy this podcast. The music was perfect, used really well and Ellroy's voice moved with the music. I hope the last episode wasn't the actual series finale. If you're in a rush, come back when you have time to savor and enjoy the entire production.
