I Can Do This Show Me How!

By: Dr. Linda Rose
  • Summary

  • Welcome to "I Can Do This, Show Me How," a podcast where each episode is an adventure on a transformative journey. I'm Dr. Linda Rose, your guide through the realms of empowerment and self-discovery. At age 34, I stepped onto the campus of West Los Angeles College to enter the PACE Program, feeling utterly out of place. Having barely graduating from high school and after spending over a decade as a secretary in the space and technology sector, I was burdened by an inner critic that whispered I wasn’t college material. Yet, driven by a deep desire to change not only my life but that of my children, I chose to silence that voice. This decision marked the beginning of a journey that would eventually see me soar to earn an AA, BA, and MA in 6 years while I worked full time and cared for two children. Then I earned a doctorate degree in educational leadership at age 54 to later become a community college president.

Now, I want to share this journey with you. Whether you're contemplating a career change, transitioning from full-time employment, or seeking to rediscover your passions, this podcast is for you. We'll navigate the path laid out by Joseph Campbell's iconic 'The Hero's Journey.' From the ordinary world to the call to adventure, through trials and revelations, we’ll explore these stages through personal stories and insights from my years of teaching, leading, guiding, and mentoring.

You will hear interviews with individuals who have dared to transform their lives. Each week, we'll decode these mythical stages and apply them to our own lives—helping you find the courage to say, 'I can do this! Show me how!' Join me as we embark on a journey to find your path, reclaim, or create your narrative, and embrace the hero within.

  • From the Ashes: A Father and Daughter’s Hero’s Journey
    May 8 2025

Life isn’t life without its challenges. Some are minor, others are life-altering. American writer, Joseph Campell, would frame these challenges, particularly our most difficult ones, as a call to adventure - one of the twelve stages of what he termed ‘The Hero’s Journey’. When life as you know it drastically shifts, the process of overcoming the hurdles in front of you is one that you must navigate with a steady hand. One way of doing this is to study ‘storytelling frameworks’. That is, to draw on the experiences of others to help lead you to the finish line.

In today's episode, I have two very special guests joining me to tell the story of a momentous challenge that they are still navigating their way through. In January of this year, California was ravaged by some of the deadliest fires the state had ever seen. Altadena residents, father and daughter, Mr. Michael Moore and Dr. Inez Moore, bore witness to this devastation firsthand when they lost their home in one of these fires. The story that they share is one of perseverance, strength, community, and one that embodies Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey in so many ways.

Tune in and listen to the twentieth episode to hear Mr. Michael and Dr. Inez Moore’s story of survival.

In this episode, you will learn:

What coping mechanisms my guests have used to deal with the tragedy of losing their home in the fire (5:34)

One of the catalyst experiences my guests had that allowed them to start to heal (10:42)

How relationships between my guests’ friends and neighbours have evolved since the fire (12:01)

How my guests’ community are using support groups to vet those commissioned to rebuild their homes (16:46)

How this experience has shaped my guests’ spiritual journey (18:03)

Resources and strategies my guests used to deal with financial hurdles caused by the fire (26:33)

  • Dissecting the Educational Journey of a Young African American Woman (with Dr. Vaniethia Hubbard)
    Apr 3 2025

Change isn’t easy. Adaptation isn’t easy. But both are something we all must do at some point in our lives. Whether they feel significant or not, these life moments are crucial in understanding who we are, who we’re becoming, and where we want to go. And, because change and adaptation are often difficult, perseverance comes into play. Pushing through fear, stagnation, and uncertainty is of utmost importance because it builds confidence and strength, and it paints a clearer picture of how to get what you want out of life.

In today's episode, I’m honoured to be joined by the incredible Dr. Vaniethia Hubbard. Dr. Hubbard is the Vice President of Students Services at Santa Ana College and she’s joined me to talk about her own journey through education. We discuss what it was like for Dr. Hubbard to leave for university for the first time, what she struggled with along her educational journey, and how she was ultimately able to figure out her calling in life.

Tune in and listen to the eighteenth episode to hear Dr. Hubbard’s story and learn about her own story of courage, strength, and perseverance.

In this episode, you will learn:

    • What called Dr. Hubbard to education (2:23)
    • Why Dr. Hubbard says she doesn’t think she was ready to leave home for university at the time that she did (10:02)
    • How Dr. Hubbard overcame feeling like a failure during her days in university (17:22)
    • What swayed Dr. Hubbard to attend Clark Atlanta University over the others she’d applied for (21:36)
    • About Dr. Hubbard’s work as an adoption and foster care social worker (33:18)
    • About Dr. Hubbard’s transition from social work to working in community colleges (33:15)
