They discuss the intricate process of selecting authors and titles for publication, the collaborative relationship between authors and publishers, and the importance of fitting the right publisher with the right author.

The role of the literary scout/acquisitions editor can influence the publishing process for authors. Isaiah Taylor spoke about his role in championing books that serve the reader and support the author's vision. His approach is not just about the content but also the author's intent and ability to engage with their audience. There are many unseen efforts that go into the decision-making process of what books get published.

Kevin Washburn and Isaiah Taylor emphasized authenticity and the importance of writing with the reader in mind. Our conversation is full of strategies for how authors can do that while overcoming challenges in the writing process. • Manage Like a Mother
    Sep 19 2023

It's not just about being a mother or a woman. It's about leveraging the wisdom and lessons learned from your mom to excel in the workplace, regardless of gender. - Valerie Cockerell

Valerie Cockerell is no stranger to a challenge. Navigating her way through a myriad of roles, including as a leader at Disney, she found herself juggling the responsibilities of being a mother and a leader in the workplace simultaneously. As she navigated the world of parenting and leadership by learning on the fly she started noticing similarities between the two.

Realizing the potential of her unique perspective connecting leadership and motherhood, Valerie decided to share it with the world in a book. It didn't take long for her to recognize that writing a book required a similar level of discipline and structure as leading a team or raising a child. The result is an inspiring and relatable guide to leadership that challenges traditional perspectives and champions the valuable lessons learned from motherhood.

In her new book, "Manage Like a Mother," Valerie shares a unique look at the intersection between motherhood and leadership. She emphasizes the importance of consistency, credibility, and providing support and guidance to others in both roles. They want to educate, keep their children safe, and help them become the best they can be, which are all things a leader should do for their team.

There are three parts to the book: laying the foundation for success, modus operandi, and thriving. These parts encompass the essential aspects of parenting and managing, focusing on character matters, daily responsibilities, and skills like time management and crisis management.

The writing process has also opened the door to future projects, including a sequel to her book and a Manage Like a Mother project, where she aims to gather stories and quotes from mothers all over the world. Ultimately, she looks to continue the conversation about leadership and motherhood.

    Aug 15 2023

"Even if you only sell three copies, it is worth the time. You've earned this experience as an author, and it's an opportunity to engage with your readers and leave a lasting impression." - David Hancock

Many authors wonder about the value of book signings. During this episode we dive deep into the topic, discussing why book signings are so important and how to make the most out of them.

As a publisher David often gets asked if book signings are worth it. There are people on both sides of this. Some that clearly share that they do not want sit for 90 minutes to 2 hours and sell three books. They feel it is a waste of time. Then there are others who find book signings to be an incredible experience. They feel like they meet some amazing people and get the chance to talk about their work. They count down to the opportunity to do it again.

In the world of publishing, book signings hold a value beyond the surface level. Not only do they serve as a great way to connect with readers, but they also create a powerful platform for authors to make their mark in the bookstore, quite literally. They are a secret weapon for boosting book sales and audience engagement. Don't hesitate to explore unconventional venues like grocery stores or jewelry shops for your book signings. Anywhere there are people, there is an opportunity to connect with readers.

There are certainly challenges and not all signings will be perfect. However, the thrill and fulfillment of directly connecting with readers can give authors unanticipated inspiration. There is not much that can motivate your next book like seeing someone's eyes light up as they get their copies autographed.

Take a listen to hear how a successful book signing can:

    • create a lasting impression on your audience
    • lead to prime bookstore placements
    • have the potential to bring a notable increase to your sales
