    How do coaches attract ideal coaching clients?

    It helps to think a bit like a scientist.

    You have an idea that seems valid. Then you conduct experiments several times with slight adjustments to one variable or another all while tracking your results.

    Over time, something becomes clear.

    Sometimes, what becomes clear is that this set of approaches or ideas aren’t yet the right thing. So you try something else.

    But often, there’s a clue that you’re on the right track and you move forward from there.

    Your willingness to explore, guided by patience and strategy, is key.

    All businesses start this way.

    It’s not an arbitrary process but it does require faith, courage and stick-to-itiveness.

    There’s nothing boring about earning well as a coach.

    But coaches often avoid setting financial goals and tracking expenses to plan for profit.

    What’s up with that?

    Well, in my early years, I failed to act like I even had a business, so I get it! I just wanted to coach and help people.

    I steered clear of tasks that felt corporate because I’d left that world for good.

    So, … I didn’t set a budget for my business. I chronically OVERSPENT on online courses, certifications and whatever bright shiny object landed in my inbox.

    When you first start your coaching business, it’s normal to follow what you see other coaches do.

    Before creating your coaching business website, you probably looked at a bunch of other coach’s websites and modeled those or let your web designer make those critical layout and feature decisions.

    You likely ended up with online brochure about coaching services and a prominent button inviting a free Intro Call, Discovery Call or Sample Coaching Session.

    My first coaching website had a button like that too, and I wondered why it never paid off.

    Coaches often tell me that they’ve been unofficially coaching for much of their lives before they took coach training. That was true for me as well.

    During University, my work study job was Peer Counseling and I loved it!

    In my last job as marketing director of a testing laboratory, my colleagues would seek me out, wanting a sounding board.

    It got to be that sometimes I couldn’t get my work done and I joked about putting up a sign on my door that said The Doctor Is NOT in.

    But in my heart those types of conversations were thrilling to me.

    When I started my coaching business, if you would have asked me my marketing approach I would have said “I let people know I’m a coach and offer a free sample coaching sessions to enroll clients.

    Did that approach work for me? Not a wit.

    Even though I got a lot of praise for the sessions, people who had a free session said “Thanks” but no interest in long term coaching came about.

    It took me a long time to realize why my mindset and actions weren’t paying off.

    I’m a bit surprised when I look at coach’s website and see them trying this same approach.

    I feel so much compassion for you if you’re in that place and I am instantly transported back to my own frustration early on – working so hard and not getting results.
