Shri Bhagavad Gita Chapter 12 | श्री भगवद गीता अध्याय 12

By: Yatrigan kripya dhyan de!
  • Summary

  • This chapter begins with Arjun asking Shree Krishna about the two types of yogis and among them whom does He consider perfect. Those who worship the formless Brahman or those who are devoted to the personal-form of God. Shree Krishna declares that devotees can attain Him by both paths. However, He considers those who worship His personal-form as the best yogis. In this small chapter of 20 verses, Shree Krishna emphasizes that the path of devotion is the highest among all types of spiritual practices.

This verse is from the Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 12, Verse 1. The translation is:

    Arjuna uvāca
Evaṁ satata-yuktā ye bhaktās tvāṁ paryupāsate
Ye cāpy akṣaram avyaktaṁ teṣāṁ ke yoga-vittamāḥ

"Arjuna said: Those who are constantly engaged in devotion to You, O Lord, and who worship You with steadfastness, and those who meditate upon the unmanifest, imperishable (Akshara) Brahman—among them, who are considered the most perfected in yoga?"

In this verse, Arjuna is inquiring from Lord Krishna about two types of devotees:

    Constant devotion (Satata-yukta):

The first group of devotees are those who are always engaged in the worship of the Lord with steadfastness, always remembering and serving Him. These are the ones who engage in Bhakti Yoga, focusing their hearts and minds on God.

    Meditation on the unmanifest (Akṣara):

The second group of devotees mediate on the imperishable (Akṣara) Brahman, the unmanifested and formless aspect of the Divine. They do not focus on a personal God, but rather on the absolute, formless reality, contemplating the eternal truth.

    Arjuna is asking:

Among these two types of worshippers—those who constantly engage in devotional service to the personal God (Bhakti Yoga), and those who meditate on the unmanifest and formless aspect of God (Akshara)—who are superior in their yoga (spiritual discipline)? Which of these two is considered to have attained the highest level of spiritual progress?

This sets the stage for Lord Krishna's response, which follows in the next verses, explaining the superiority of Bhakti Yoga over the path of the formless, unmanifest meditation.
