  • A Fascinating Tour of Our Solar System & The Amazing Story of the Sandwich
    Dec 23 2024
What would happen if you were walking by the Empire State Building right at the time someone dropped a penny, and it hit you on top of your head? Listen as this episode begins with the science behind this hypothetical experiment that reveals whether you would live or die. Source: Bill Sones author of Can A Guy Get Pregnant? https://amzn.to/3ZZbwkF What does it smell like on the moon? What would it feel like to walk on other planets? These are some of the questions we explore as we take an imaginary tour of our solar system with John Moores. He has been a member of the science and operations teams of several space missions and has written dozens of academic papers about planetary science. John is also co-author of the book, Daydreaming in the Solar System: Surfing Saturn's Rings, Golfing on the Moon, and Other Adventures in Space Exploration (https://amzn.to/4fbYRPt). Who doesn’t love a good sandwich? What makes a great sandwich? What makes a horrible one? Come along as we take a look back through the history and lore and the sandwich as well as some suggestions on some sandwiches you can make that will knock your socks off. Our guide is Barry Enderwick. He is the quintessential expert on the sandwich and has eaten just about every kind of sandwich (good and bad) you can imagine or has been created since the dawn of sandwiches. Barry is the author of the book Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook: All the Best (and Most Surprising) Things People Have Put Between Slices of Bread (https://amzn.to/3VxNVEI) You surely have had the experience of walking outside into cold weather and then your nose starts running. • Fascinating Stories of Christmas Customs & The Art of Talking with Children - SYSK Choice
    Dec 21 2024
Restaurants are crawling with germs. It’s not all the restaurant’s fault – where there are people, there are going to be germs. This episode begins with a look at the germiest things in restaurants that you may want to avoid touching or at least wipe down. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/19/germ-infested-areas-restaurants_n_2159281.html Christmas is chock full of customs. We travel home for the holidays, we wrap Christmas gifts, we eat Christmas foods, we sing Christmas songs, and the list of customs goes on and on. Joining me to explain why we have these customs and where they came from is Brian Earl. He is host of the Christmas Past podcast https://christmaspastpodcast.com/podcast/ and author of the book Christmas Past: The Fascinating Stories Behind Our Favorite Holiday’s Traditions (https://amzn.to/3FoB3bt). It’s a great segment for anyone who loves Christmas. Talking with children is different than talking to other adults – or at least it should be. That’s according to my guest Rebecca Rolland, a speech pathologist, Harvard lecturer, and author of the book The Art of Talking with Children (https://amzn.to/3Y2nYgd). You will want to hear this conversation if you will be spending time with children during the holidays. It will provide great insight into how to have wonderful conversations with kids that benefit them and you. You have seen the sign that says, “Buy one, get one free” – right? And while that sounds enticing, it isn’t always such a great deal. Listen as I reveal some retail psychology that you need to be aware of. https://www.businessinsider.com/7-way-stores-trick-you-into-making-impulse-purchases-2012-5?op=1 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS!!! • How You CAN Change Other People & Some Interesting Science Explained
    Dec 19 2024
Listening to music with air pods or headphones can damage your hearing. To prevent this, you need to understand the common causes of hearing loss. This episode begins with an explanation so you can avoid the problem while still enjoying your favorite music. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hearing-loss/symptoms-causes/syc-20373072 How many times have you heard people say, “You can’t change other people!” Well, that’s not exactly true according to my guest, Peter Bregman. Peter is a well-known consultant, coach and author who believes you CAN get other people to change if you do it right. While his method may not work all the time, it can increase your chances of helping other people make important, positive changes. Peter Bregman is author of the several books including You Can Change Other People (https://amzn.to/3GGpgUh). Science can explain a lot. And as you listen to this episode, you are going to hear scientific explanations regarding everyday things in your life like plastics, old book smell and what makes a food a superfood. It’s interesting stuff from my guest Dr. Joe Schwarcz. Joe is director of McGill University’s Office for Science and Society and the author of several books. His latest is, Superfoods, Silkworms, and Spandex: Science and Pseudoscience in Everyday Life (https://amzn.to/3Zoc3ei). You have likely heard reports that people who have pets are healthier and live longer. But what’s the connection? How does having a pet do that? Listen as I explain the several ways pets are beneficial and how having a dog could save your life as well as improve your child’s social skills. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/326609#Dogs-an-important-factor-in-rehabilitation? Great

The host brings out fascinating topics and outstanding experts, and it should not be 4 stars just because it's hard to understand or because the listener has an excuse such as "Meh I'm korean and I'm so proud that I'm gonna show it off by taking off stars"

Interesting topics and easy to listen

The host Mike Carruthers picks interesting topics. I really enjoyed his last week’s podcast that talked about how to hold effective meetings. His podcasts help me choose my next audiobook. Plus the host asks great questions to the presenters and has a pleasant voice that is easy to listen too. I highly recommend this podcast, I listen to it when I do the dishes or other chores throughout the house, or during my commute.
