About this listen

I was a morbidly obese heart surgeon.

All through high school, college, med school and surgical training, I followed the U.S. dietary guidelines for both diet and exercise. Yet nothing I did kept the weight off.

I just kept getting fatter and fatter.

Each day in surgery, I would split open the chests of people just like me. I knew I was heading for the operating table myself if I didn't find solutions that worked.

In 2016, I finally found a way to lose 100 pounds and keep it off.

Now - in addition to doing heart surgery - I work to help people just like me get healthy, lose the weight and keep it off.

I'm Dr. Philip Ovadia, the rebel M.D. and cardiac surgeon who is working to keep people off my operating table.

  • The Insulin Connection: Rethinking Female Health Beyond "Just Hormones - Dr. Andrea Salcedo DO
    Jun 24 2025

In this groundbreaking conversation, "The Conscious Gynecologist" Dr. Andrea Salcedo joins Dr. Philip Ovadia to uncover the profound connection between women's reproductive health and metabolic health. Dr. Salcedo shares startling research showing how insulin resistance impacts everything from PCOS and gestational diabetes to uterine fibroids and gynecologic cancers.

You'll learn why the same inflammatory processes that cause heart disease also create uterine fibroids, how pregnancy naturally induces a state of insulin resistance to protect the developing fetus, and why morning sickness serves an important biological function. Dr. Salcedo explains how traditional gynecological approaches often miss the metabolic root causes of women's health issues, leading to band-aid solutions rather than addressing the underlying insulin resistance.

With her unique background as both an academic researcher and metabolic health advocate, Dr. Salcedo provides practical insights into how lifestyle changes can dramatically improve gynecological health without relying solely on medications or surgery. The conversation shatters common misconceptions about female health problems and offers a new framework for understanding women's bodies beyond the "just hormones" explanation.

Whether you're struggling with reproductive health issues, planning for pregnancy, or simply want to understand the intricacies of female health, this conversation offers vital information that most medical professionals aren't discussing. Listen now to discover why one in three women lose their uterus by age 60 – and what can be done to prevent it.

    BIG IDEA

Gynecologic diseases like PCOS, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids aren't just "female hormone problems" – they're manifestations of metabolic dysfunction and insulin resistance that affect the entire body.

  • Sugar Addiction Recovery: Why It's Harder Than Quitting Alcohol - Mike Collins
    Jun 17 2025

Sugar addiction is a legitimate biochemical addiction that affects about one-third of the population, is often rooted in childhood emotional self-soothing behaviors, and can be more challenging to overcome than alcohol or drug addiction because it's socially acceptable and starts at a very young age.

    KISMET

When individuals successfully overcome sugar addiction, their most valued improvement isn't weight loss but rather enhanced cognitive function - including better focus, improved memory, and reduced anxiety - as their "brain comes back online" after healing from the neurological impacts of chronic sugar consumption.

    EPISODE SUMMARY

In this episode, Dr. Philip Ovadia interviews Mike Collins, known as "The Sugar Free Man," about the reality of sugar addiction and its impacts on metabolic and mental health. Collins explains how sugar addiction often begins in childhood as a form of emotional self-soothing that becomes wired into the brain's reward system. He reveals that about one-third of people are biochemically addicted to sugar, setting up cravings they cannot control through willpower alone. Collins shares that many recovering alcoholics and drug addicts report quitting sugar is actually harder than overcoming their primary addiction. The podcast explores the physical and psychological aspects of sugar addiction, including how abstinence for 90 days can allow the brain to heal and create new neural pathways. Collins also discusses how artificial sweeteners keep sugar cravings alive by maintaining the sweet taste sensation. The conversation highlights how sugar addiction recovery involves addressing emotional triggers and finding healthier self-soothing mechanisms beyond just changing eating habits.

  • Beyond Carbs: Understanding the Root Causes of Metabolic Dysfunction with Dr. Paul Saladino
    Jun 10 2025

The primary cause of metabolic dysfunction is not carbohydrates themselves but rather the combination of processed "naked" sugars and high linoleic acid seed oils that damage mitochondrial function at a cellular level.

    KISMET

While most people focus on limiting carbohydrates to improve metabolic health, the research actually shows that fruit juice and honey can improve insulin sensitivity in some diabetics due to their complex chemical structures that positively influence gut bacteria – completely contradicting conventional wisdom about sugar.

    EPISODE SUMMARY

Dr. Paul Saladino shares his evidence-based perspective on the true causes of metabolic dysfunction. Contrary to popular belief, carbohydrates themselves don't cause insulin resistance. Instead, the primary culprits are processed "naked" sugars that disrupt gut bacteria and seed oils high in linoleic acid that damage mitochondrial membranes. These damaged membranes lead to energy production inefficiency at the cellular level, which manifests as various metabolic disorders. Dr. Saladino explains how the standard American diet contains 5-10 times more linoleic acid than our ancestors consumed, primarily from seed oils in processed foods. He argues that returning to single-ingredient foods and specifically reducing linoleic acid intake could rapidly improve metabolic health. The discussion challenges conventional medical wisdom about cholesterol, atherosclerosis, and the treatment of metabolic disorders.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as Dr. Ovadia tackles the plus and minus of the major diets available to help people make their best decision. The opening of the book was very powerful. He lays out how to take control of your health to live a better life. Highly recommend this for the family.

I looked forward to listening those podcasts, cause of the content. Content great. Book is clear. But these podcasts, oh my.. Next to proper facts about sugar, obesity and metabolic health, they also didn't teach eloquence in med school. An average of 4 'you knows' (not exaggerating) per sentence made me ditching the podcasts after one and a half episode , and grabbing the book.

Content great, Performance horrible 'youknow'
