The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast

By: Ginny Yurich
  • Summary

  • Childhood is finite at just shy of 9.5 million minutes. We only get one shot at it. One of the biggest decisions we make is how we will use that time. Research has confirmed time and time again that what children are naturally and unabashedly drawn to, unrestricted outside play, contributes extensively to every area of childhood development. The importance here cannot be understated. Every year we aim to match nature time with the average amount of American kid screen time (which is currently 1200 hours per year). Have a goal. Track your time outside. Take back childhood. Inspire others.

  • 1KHO 427: There is So Little Time For Kids to Be Kids | Libbie Palmer, TimberNook Chiddingfold
    Feb 7 2025
In this inspiring episode, Ginny Yurich welcomes Libbie Palmer, the passionate founder of TimberNook Chiddingfold, to discuss the urgent need for unstructured, outdoor play in childhood. As a mother of six living on a farm in the UK, Libbie shares how she watched childhood shift over the past two decades—from one filled with free play and adventure to one increasingly dominated by schedules and structured activities. She reveals how her journey into home education and launching a TimberNook program transformed not just her children’s lives but the lives of countless others. Together, they dive into the power of mixed-age play, the importance of resisting societal pressure to over-schedule, and how giving children time and space to explore builds confidence, creativity, and resilience. Libbie also shares how stepping into the unknown and launching TimberNook has been a deeply rewarding experience, allowing her to work alongside her children while fostering a much-needed cultural shift in her community. Through captivating stories of kids engineering pulley systems, braving the elements, and discovering the joys of true, self-directed play, she paints a hopeful picture of what childhood should look like. Whether you're a parent questioning the fast pace of modern life or someone considering launching your own outdoor play initiative, this episode is a powerful call to action—reminding us all that childhood is fleeting, and protecting play is one of the greatest gifts we can offer the next generation. ** Learn more about Libbie's TimberNook in Chiddingfold here Follow Libbie on Social Media @timbernookchiddingfold ** Download your free 1000 Hours Outside tracker here >> https://www.1000hoursoutside.com/trackers Find everything you need to kick off your 1000 Hours Outside Journey here >> https://www.1000hoursoutside.com/blog/allthethings Order of copy of Ginny's newest book, Until the Streetlights Come On here >> https://amzn.to/3RXjBlN Learn more about your ad choices. • 1KHO 425: Drowning in Information, Starving for Experience | Tim Elmore, Generation Z Unfiltered
    Feb 3 2025
In this episode of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, host Ginny Yurich sits down with leadership expert and bestselling author Tim Elmore to explore a startling reality: today’s kids are drowning in information but starving for firsthand experience. As adolescence stretches longer than ever—sometimes into the late 20s—young people are overexposed to knowledge before they’re ready but underexposed to real-world challenges until it’s too late. Elmore unpacks why this shift is happening and how overprotection, prescriptive parenting, and risk aversion are leaving kids unprepared for adulthood. With decades of experience developing young leaders, Elmore offers solutions for reversing this trend—starting with allowing kids to face real challenges, take meaningful risks, and develop the social and emotional resilience they’ll need in life. He explains why protecting kids from discomfort today can lead to greater harm tomorrow and why true preparation means letting them fail, struggle, and grow. This powerful conversation will challenge you to rethink how we guide the next generation toward genuine readiness, not just survival. ** Get your copy of Generation Z Unfiltered here Learn more about Tim Elmore and all he has to offer including the Habitudes here Learn more about Growing Leaders here ** Get your 1000 Hours Outside Really Very Crunchy Tour Tickets here !! very informative and fun to listen to!

I just had my first baby this spring and through my endless research on how to be the best parent in the world, I stumbled on the 1000 hours outside challenge (which we will be doing next year as well as trying to get as much time outside as possible for the remainder of this year). I was then so excited to find this podcast! This podcast offers a range of topics focusing on wellness that benefit adults and children alike! Keep up the good work Ginny!

Best Podcast For Raising Kids

This podcast is the only one I prioritize to keep up on. The topics range enough to help in all areas of raising children, but the concept runs deep, and the roots are there for all topics, that being outside helps! I'm in awe of what I learn and regularly hear my friends learn. This podcast is a topic of discussion regularly with my friends, and it just keeps spreading as we pass it along as a suggestion to others. I cannot recommend this enough!
