The 40+ Athlete

By: Dr. Matt Angove
  • Summary

  • As we age, we have less margin in our health. We can’t continue with the same bad habits or take the same junk-filled supplements and expect to make gains in our fitness. I started The 40+ Athlete podcast because I’ve seen what is possible when we give our bodies the proper fuel and stimuli to adapt and thrive. Through interviews and solo episodes, I will be sharing nutrition and fitness recommendations to redefine what is possible at 40 and beyond! For example, my Dad, also known as the CPA, is a a testament to the fact that you're never too old to change your health and your life. He has gone to the CrossFit Games 5x, placing 2nd in the Masters division. He's always been physically active, doing programs like P90X but once he started doing CrossFit at the age of 59, he experienced massive changes in his body composition. His lean muscle tissue increased and his body fat percentage decreased. If a CPA who owns his own business and sits in front of a computer all day can become a CrossFit champion in his 60's, you can make serious gains in your fitness too. Let’s redefine what is possible so that at 60, 70, 80, we can say “yep, still got it”.

  • How to benefit from Zone 2 training
    Jun 6 2024

Today we're talking about Zone 2 training.

Zone 2 training is exercising at 60-70% of your maximum heart rate.

For example, if you are 50 years old, you would subtract 50 from 220 to get a maximum heart rate of 170 beats per minute with 60-70% being 102-119 beats per minute.

    Benefits of Zone 2 training:

    1. Increases aerobic capacity
    2. Increases fat metabolism
    3. Enhances recovery
    4. Builds endurance
    5. Improves insulin sensitivity

Aim for 2 45 min Zone 2 training sessions per week.

Some Zone 2 activities to consider are: walking, swimming, and cycling.

  • Why Does Whey Protein Isolate Get So Much Attention?
    May 29 2024

The main difference between whey concentrate and isolate is the processing.

Whey protein isolate undergoes more processing in order to isolate the protein from whey.

The processing to isolate the protein component of whey, clears out a lot of lactose, fats, immunoglobulins, vitamins and minerals.

This is why a 20 gram serving of whey protein isolate will contain around 18 grams of protein, whereas a 20 gram serving of whey protein concentrate will contain on average about 16.5-17 grams of protein.

The flavor profile of whey protein isolate is also more easily manipulated via removal of the other components of whey, making it much more amenable to use in processed foods.

Whey protein isolate by itself will be less flavorful.

The more processing that occurs with any food, the greater the loss of its inherent nutrients.

Often words like protein are thrown around, like protein is protein and it is all the same, just hit your gram levels. But just like 20 grams of protein from black beans is not going to have the same benefit as 20 grams of protein from beef, so too, when it comes to whey protein isolate as compared to whey protein concentrate.
