• ESS 2024 round up - SNOWMED CODES with John Lord & Robbie Burns
    Oct 2 2024

Today is a round up episode from our visit to the 2024 Emergency Services Show

In todays episode i speak with John Lord & Robbie Burns about snowmed codes. All NHS healthcare providers in England must now use SNOMED CT for capturing clinical terms within electronic patient record systems. Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales also have programmes of work underway.

After thoroughly reviewing the available scientific literature, the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified occupational exposure as a firefighter as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1), on the basis of sufficient evidence for cancer in humans.

This is supported by an ever-increasing raft of research, including the biomonitoring research study of UK firefighters, conducted by Professor Anna Stec and her team at the University of Central Lancashire and Lancashire Teaching Hospital. This work was commissioned by the Fire Brigades Union. It has been identified that regular health monitoring and early detection can play a vital role in protecting the health and lives of firefighters.

  • #330 Tactical Firefighting UK GROUP - Dave Berry & Lewis White - BE SAHF
    Sep 26 2024

Tactical Firefighting UK is an informal group recently set up hoping to link every UK FRS together and allow for collaboration and knowledge sharing through individuals responsible for BA training delivery.
One example of this is the BE-SAHF model, an internationally recognised method of 'reading the fire' adopted by some fire services which Lewis White and Dave Berry will discuss.

This conversation delves into the evolution and importance of tactical firefighting in the UK, focusing on the collaborative efforts among firefighters to enhance training and situational awareness. Pete, Dave & Lewis discuss the B-SAHF model, which serves as a mnemonic for situational awareness, and explore various aspects of firefighting, including the significance of networking, the role of breathing apparatus, and the dynamics of heat and flame. The discussion emphasizes the need for continuous learning and adaptation in firefighting practices to improve safety and effectiveness.

    Key Takeaways

-Tactical firefighting in the UK is a collaborative effort.
-Networking is crucial for sharing knowledge and best practices.
-The B-SAHF model enhances situational awareness for firefighters.
-Understanding environmental factors is key to effective firefighting.
-Smoke serves as a precursor to fire and should be treated with caution.
-Controlling the flow path is essential for firefighter safety.
-Thermal imaging is a valuable tool for assessing fire conditions.
-Heat release rate is a critical factor in fire dynamics.
-Firefighters must adapt to changing materials and their combustion properties.
-Continuous learning is vital for improving firefighting techniques.

  • #329 CE-Certified Undergarments protecting Firefighters skin against carcinogenic fire gases with Thomas Dedering CEO of CPP Garments
    Sep 23 2024

Today’s podcast with Thomas Dedering revolves around the topic of firefighters' exposure to toxic fire effluents and the need for protective clothing. We discuss common misconceptions, the gap in the market for protective solutions, and the role of organizations like the Swedish Firefighters Cancer Foundation. We also delve into the testing and technology behind the CPP undergarment, which uses activated carbon to absorb hazardous fire gases.

We explore the application of this protective clothing in the fire and rescue service and the importance of protecting vulnerable groups. We also discuss the effectiveness of a protective undergarment for firefighters that can reduce exposure to toxic fire effluents.

The undergarment is made with activated carbon and is designed to capture and retain harmful substances. We also touch on the challenges of purchasing and distributing the undergarment, particularly for UK services. The potential for collaboration with turnout gear manufacturers, as well as the importance of proper washing and decontamination processes.

  • #325 Change Management & The Complexity of Change with Stephen Carver
    Sep 9 2024

STEPHEN CARVER B.Sc M.Sc C.Eng EurIng FIRM FAPM - is rated as one of the top 3 lecturers at one of Europe’s top MBA Business Schools. He has a reputation of taking complex management concepts such as Project, Programme and Crisis Management and being able to distil them down, into highly informative and fun lectures - often using “storytelling” techniques. His attitude is “if you haven’t done it – you shouldn’t be teaching it!”

He has lectured to the British armed forces pro bono for the last 20 years – and is rated as top lecturer on ACSC and ICSC. He has lectured at almost every UK military base including Shrivenham, Hereford, Conningsby, Devonport, Cosford, Uxbridge, Faslane, Falklands, Germany, Erbil and Valley. He recently shared a lively stage debate with Charles Haddon Cave at Shrivenham discussing ethical leadership.

Unusually, for an academic, he has actually spent most of his working life in real business. He started as an engineer in the offshore oil business and then worked his way up the corporate ladder at Virgin and then Halliburton reporting directly into the CEO. He still runs his own, highly successful, Project Management company working with organisations from Banks and Law firms to manufacturing and pharma.

Stephen is an unusual blend of Academic, Businessman and Teller of Tales. He has taught in almost every country in the World, and has appeared on National Radio and TV.
