When the notorious gunman, Santiago, arrives in southern New Mexico looking for someone to hire him, he sets off a war between two powerful men that are mining for gold and silver on the opposite sides of a large mountain. It is the independent prospectors between the two mines that pay the price in blood first.

When notorious gunfighter Santiago returns to Cabella, New Mexico, he finds that the town has burned down since his last visit, and all that is left is the saloon and stables. The place is now simply a stagecoach station in the desert. He meets Beth, a showgirl from his past, and has a short reunion with her before a troupe of soldiers arrive with their prisoner, Apache Joe, a renegade Indian.
