Marquis de Sade
About this listen
Four unbelievably wealthy aristocrats lock themselves in a remote medieval castle, along with forty-two victims and accomplices. Ensues the often unbearable description of perversions. This unfinished novel is a testimony to how dark the human soul can become when pushed to its limits.
Donatien-Alphonse-François, Marquis de Sade was a French aristocrat, revolutionary politician, philosopher, and writer, famous for his libertine sexuality. His works include novels, short stories, and plays. De Sade is best known for his erotic works, which combined philosophical discourse with pornography, depicting sexual fantasies. He was a proponent of extreme freedom, unrestrained by morality, religion, or law. The words sadism and sadist are derived from his name.

Story
Libidinous, licentious, salacious and very, very funny, The Satyricon is one of the most remarkable documents from ancient Rome. It tells the ribald story of Encolpius, a man of active and varied appetites (powered notably by his passion for his favourite lover, the handsome Giton), who plunges without inhibition into the life of Roman pleasures: orgies of food, feasting, abundant sex and escapades. The kind of hedonism found occasionally in Roman mosaics is here brought to life.

Story
When first published in 1759, Candide became an instant best seller and is now regarded as one of the key texts of the Enlightenment. Voltaire’s preoccupations with evil and with various kinds of human folly and intolerance found a perfect vehicle in this philosophical tale. A master storyteller, he combined often wildly entertaining action with profoundly serious sense, parodying the traditional chivalric and oriental tales with which his public was more familiar.

Story
Published just months before his death in 1768, A Sentimental Journey is Sterne's lightly fictionalised account of his own European travels; and being Sterne, it is more about digressions, misunderstandings and risqué jokes than the places he visits. Narrated by the (apparently) innocent Parson Yorick, who appeared in Sterne's other masterpiece, Tristram Shandy, it is full of anecdote and incident, and is far more about the people than the landscapes on the road from Calais.

Written as a series of letters, Poor People tells the tragic tale of a petty clerk and his impossible love for a young girl. Longing to help her and her family, he sells everything he can, but his kindness leads him only into more desperate poverty, and ultimately into debauchery. As a typical "man of the underground", he serves as the embodiment of the belief that happiness can only be achieved with riches.

Story
A psychological thriller before its time, James Hogg’s Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, published in 1824, takes us back to the world of 18th-century Scotland, into a mind haunted by religious obsession, and driven to commit murder. The events are told from several different viewpoints, so that truth and reality appear to dissolve in this disturbing story of the dark legacy of Calvinist doctrine, and how it led one man to madness.

Story
This is a story from the Fall of the House of Usher collection. The horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, with its dungeon of death, and the overhanging gloom on the House of Usher demonstrate unforgettably the unique imagination of Edgar Allan Poe. Unerringly, he touches upon some of our greatest nightmares: Premature burial, ghostly transformation, words from beyond the grave. Written in the 1840s, they have retained their power to shock and frighten even now.

Underneath the patina of civilized society lies the Sadean demimonde: a bundle of lustful appetites fueled by momentary impulse and a desire for unfettered indulgence. And the target of this savagery: Justine de Bertole, a pious and virginal heroine. Grotesque, inhumane, and compelling, Sade’s novel overturns Rousseau’s views of the social contract, and the common trope that punishment only visits sinners, to deliver a passionate treatise on good and evil, virtue and sin.

Story
The great virtue of this volume is that it reveals a lighter, comic side of Sade. He was a man obsessed, like many great writers, and his obsessions are still present here: his hatred of all things pretentious, his loathing of a corrupt judicial system, his damning of hypocrisy and false piety. One of the great anarchists of all time, he was nevertheless far from mad (as many pretended) and these works of fiction shed another light on this most feverish of minds.

Story
"Philosophy in the Bedroom" ("La philosophie dans le boudoir") was written in 1795 by the Marquis de Sade, while imprisoned in the Bastille. It is a work of erotism, laced with socio-political subversion. The main characters are libertines, who decided to give a young maiden their own brand of sex education. They explain to her that pleasure is the most important goal of all, and then proceed with affirming that she will not be able to feel "true pleasure" without pain.

Story
"Justine, or The Misfortunes of Virtue", is an early work by the Marquis de Sade. It is a novella, written in two weeks while he was imprisoned in the famous Bastille. Unlike some of his other works, it is not just a catalogue of sadism. It is meant to bring new life to an old genre, which had the reader accustomed to see virtue eventually triumph after trials only meant to bring out its value. Sade would have none of that in Justine: in her quest for virtue, the main character keeps falling into terrible situations, which humiliate her and present her with sexual lessons hidden under the mask of virtue.

Story
Described as both “one of the most important novels ever written” and “the gospel of evil,” 120 Days of Sodom was written by the Marquis de Sade, a notorious eighteenth-century aristocrat who waged a campaign of mayhem and debauchery across France, evaded execution, and inspired the word “sadism,” which came to mean receiving pleasure from pain. Despite all his crimes, Sade considered this work to be his greatest transgression.

Narration underwhelming
No professional narrator myself, I could do a much better job of dramatizing the prurient elements of this horrific tale. I'm not even boasting. The narrator's monotonous recitation pace is too fast and way too flat. He fails to realize, much less enhance, so much of the ironic humor that underscores the shock value of this never-bested example of unrestrained pornography. The remarkable piece, in itself, is to me ample proof that a clever writer's art can elevate virtually any literary genre. I give the story top marks, but the narration is woefully inadequate. What a disappointment in the final analysis; I ask you: which is the greater sin, to narrate such a tale at all, or to do it so poorly? Overall, three stars at best.

hard story to get through
thank goodness for the narration as I am not sure i would have survived reading the book. while the narrator could come off as monotonous he did excell at read through the complexity of the story. while not as difficult as Shakespeare in text it was definitely foreign to the current English vernacular.

A better love story than Twilight & 50 Shades
Not much of a story per se as a laundry list of repulsive imagery; still, it is well written and stands as a critique of the debauched decadence of the time in which it was written.
The narration is well executed, however there is a small number of technical issues in the recording. There are at least two static pops that should have been cleaned up in production: one at 5:06-8 in chapter 11 and another at 12:37-9 in chapter 13.

Lewd, disgusting, irredeemable
I remember hearing about the Marquis De Sade from the time I was a young boy in high school, but his writings had been banned for many years and I had, in spite of searching for a long time for a copy to read, not been successful in finding one. I had almost given up on it, when it suddenly, and to my great surprise, appeared on Audible. Well, I have now listened to it and found it to be one of the most repulsive, disgusting pieces of pornographic literature I have ever listened to. Much of it is enough to make even the most divergent and corrupted mind sick at the reading. I am a senior, gay man and I have a personal history of sexual activity which I considered to be rather broad-spectrum. I've often said that I will try anything once, maybe even twice. But there are scenes in this book which, had I even been a witness of, would have made me vomit. I have learned, through the reading of this book, that being a hedonist is nothing like being a libertine. But, as it has been my desire for over 40 years to acquire and read something of the writings of the Marquis De Sade, I can now say that I have accomplished my goal. Now, all I can say is be careful what you wish for.

Unbelievable
The longest three and a half hours of my life. I helped run a Strip Club during Covid… and this was worse. I give credit where credit is due, that be that as it may, it is considered something of classic literature. Beyond a shadow of a doubt my hardest read ever; I recommend to anyone seeking to enlighten themselves however… proceed with caution.

Do not buy only a fraction of the book
I find it incredibly shameful that auditable would sell this knowing it's not the entire book. what next have to pay per chapter? Auditable, REMOME THIS.
