About this listen

His past has haunted him for a lifetime…but one woman could be his salvation

Gunslinger Caden Miller's compadres are becoming a bit too domesticated for his liking. So he's off to Kansas territory to carve out a living and a space of his own - alone, just the way he likes it.

Maddie O'Hare has been drawn to Caden ever since she escaped to the Hell's Eight compound from the brothel where she was born and raised. And she's not ready to let him go so easily…until she's captured by his new neighbors.

When Caden discovers that Maddie is being held by a rival at a nearby ranch, his plan to rescue her backfires, and he finds himself the groom in what's literally a shotgun wedding. As shocked as Caden is by the bizarre turn of events, Maddie's grateful kiss holds a fiery promise that's far more unexpected. But with old enemies catching up with him, Caden and Maddie will face a danger that tests their passion - and will either bind them together forever or break them apart for good.

Not up to the mark

I had been wondering about the final 3 characters in the Hell's Eight series as they are very side line mentions in the first novels. Not that engaged with them even now. This felt more like "well, I did say eight so I have to deliver...."

The narrator really did NOT help. Her efforts at doing a male voice = FAIL.
They all sounded terrible. I would have preferred she just read the story as her speaking voice was pleasant.

I hope the next Hell's Eight character gives Ms. McCarty a more catching story to present.

Please bring back previous narrator

Narrator detracted from the audio book experience. Otherwise, this story was a good addition to the series.

#6 of Hell’s Eight

McCarty’s strength is in her characters, and devising situations that both bring together, and set against each other, the male and female leads. If the larger story arc of Hell’s Eight were integrated better into the individual books, they would be just about perfect. This book brings together Caden and Maddie. We get to see Maddie growing out of her fantasies when stressed, and learning to deal with the real world, without turning into a psychological exposition. McCarty leaves out a lot of what motivates Caden, if he has any success with the gold mine, if he added to Hell’s Eight financially, how he overcomes his demons. Sarah, just tuck in a sentence here or there.
Hoffman was ok as narrator, but definitely not one of the best of the series. The publisher/ editor would have served this series better by having a single, better narrator for all Hell’s Eight books to add that link, the continuity that would add so much more to the writing.

Pretty Good Overall

I like the Hell's Eight Series, even though I'm not into some of the sex. Historical Westerns are not that plentiful on Audible. I liked this one and I'll probably listen to it again, I just didn't like it as well as the first few, so I only gave it 3 stars. Still, I would buy it again.

Good Book - Terrible Narrator

I enjoyed the story. I've like all the books in the series, but this narrator was really hard to hear. She was rushed in the wrong places and when the direction was saying 'low voice' she was shouting and talking fast. I almost gave up on listening but I wanted to hear the story.

Poor narrator ruins mediocre story

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator's attempts at male voices was hard to get past. The story needed more action as well.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Glimpses into prior characters ongoing lives was fascinating. The least was the narrators male voices sounded like hillbillies. Sarah's stories are usually so erotic and romantic but it is hard to feel that way when the voices turn you off.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The choice of a female narrator reading a male dominated story is truly unfortunate. Especially when most of the males sound the same and only slightly different from the females. They sounded like they were from hills of Tennessee not Texas.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

If it had been read by Jason Adams from Sam's Creed or Zoe Winslow from Caine's Reckoning. They brought the stories to life.

Great series; great book

Standalone couple's story in series focused on group of friends and one couple per book. Recommend reading the books in order to avoid spoilers. No cliffhanger.

Well-written story and cast of characters.

Several hot, hot, hot scenes.

Narration is good.

Hard to listen to.

The Narrator's voice was too feminine to represent male characters. Really detracted from the story.
