About this listen

After the EMP brought America to its knees, Jack Miller and his family barely escaped Baltimore with their lives. Wyatt and the Millers made the trip to his West Virginia homestead, but without supplies, they are unprepared to face the difficult winter. Jack is forced to go far from his home in search of food. He stumbles on a cache of food large enough to feed his family for months but encounters another group who claims the resource for their own, setting in motion a conflict that will spiral of control.

Contains mature themes.

This second book in the trilogy was well written and a good narrative. There were some unexpected twist and turns but overall it was good.

A well done second book in the trilogy

Sad to see it come to the end. Thankfully it carry's on with book 3!

Good story telling but a little short. Can't wait to listen to book 3.

Better than most in this genre.

The author is good. But her left out and didn’t mention how he and his family got from their home back to Wyatt’s farm in Morgantown. How about a 1.5 book telling that story?

What happened between Baltimore & WV?

Disappointing sequel to Book 1. I was expecting a story about how Jack and his family traveled to Wyatt's home town and got down to the business of living simply but well. Instead there was no good transition from Book 1 to 2. In Book 2 Jack and his family are already in Wyatt's area and living off acorn bread with the younger son starving due to food allergy to acorns. They seem inept.

Introduction grabs your attention. Two concluding soliloquies by the Chief of Police and Jack pretty good. In between the beginning and the end, mostly shoot em up running around - boring and nasty. Villain Shane really vile. Wyatt, Dutch, Chief of Police seem to be the only mature men.

Not really a prepper novel. Interesting points about how to leach the tannin from acorns and how to get warm if you are dunked in a cold river. Not much useful information. This might appeal to 8 to 12 year old boys, but would you want your sons to listen to this since most of the men's examples are bad and appeal to the baser instincts? I was thinking this could be played on a car ride with young boys, but I think it would only encourage them to hit and punch each other more.

Travis Baldree, the narrator very good. I kept thinking the author, John Winchester, must be under age 25. Book 1 shows John Winchester's potential, this just does not live up to it.

Book 1 was so promising. I had planned on listening to Books 2 and 3, but after listening to Book 2, I will not get Book 3.

I cannot recommend this book.

Good if you are a preteen boy

I thought this was a pretty good book, not as exciting as the first one to me but still a good read. I’m pretty excited to see what happens next

My thoughts

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, I was looking forward to this one ending

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Skipped much time from reuniting with family to moving to the farm. Not much at all was heard about Jacks Wife.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

It was ok. I could do without all women sounding like total idiots

Any additional comments?

I realize this is fiction. But so many "near death" experiences was just too much.

Second book not as good as the first

it was an enjoyable continuation of the first story. hearing about our average Andy here taking on a simple Saul the way he did was great. a good Hatfield and McCoy style of story with the survival aspect is grand.

plot

Well written and narrated so it’s very enjoyable to listen to. It’s interesting to see how a normal everyday person is exposed to moral dilemmas that can occur without law and order

It’s a good survival story
