Publisher's summary

The hilarious story of Fanny Hill and her erotic exploits in London shocked the religious and literary hierarchy, who condemned the book, thus immediately increasing demand for it. The story chronicles the life of an 18th-century maiden who, left without parents, journeys to the big city to try life on her own. Despite its highly charged erotic content and vehement criticism from the Bishop of London in 1749 as "an open insult upon religion and good manners", this romp through societies high and low contains not a single obscene word.

Editorial reviews

Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure tells of the erotic adventures of a woman living in England in the late 1700s. The story is organized as a series of letters written by Fanny to an unknown woman recipient. In these letters, Fanny defends her choices in terms of love, carnal desire, and survival. Barbara McCulloh succeeds in capturing the protagonists' sensuality as well as her strength. The performance is captivating; the listener is invested in Fanny's fortunes and misfortunes. Fanny Hill's controversial content continues to rouse the audience's interest centuries after its first publication.

A Great First Listen

This is a book I always meant to read, but never did. So it made a good choice for my first audio book.

The story is actually pretty good; I liked Fanny and was always hoping she would get her Charles back, even while enjoying her adventures with others. I disagree with the publisher that it is ?hilarious?, but it is mostly light hearted and amusing.

The descriptions of erotic scenes without ever using a single obscene word demonstrate that explicit content does not have to be vulgar. While little is left to the imagination, there is almost an innocence in the narrative that is quite amusing at times.

The language is 200 years old and hard to follow at times. But Barbara McCulloh?s reading is wonderful. Her voice is clear and strong and easy to understand, despite having to deal with some words that are rare in today?s vocabulary.

For me this was an excellent introduction to recorded books.

The book is a classic!

I first read this book when I was 17. That was a very long time ago. I recently re-read it to see if it was still amusing, and it was indeed. The mores of different times and places cannot help but fascinate. The book has a freshness and innocence that is surprising, considering the subject matter. I highly recommend.

Steamy Novel

If you could sum up Fanny Hill in three words, what would they be?

Interesting steamy novel.

What other book might you compare Fanny Hill to and why?

I would compare it to Shades of Grey because of its erotic tale of experiences and a love affair.

Which scene was your favorite?

The end when she gets the money and her man.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no.
