The man who holds the power rules the valley. But I won’t let him rule me.
To get out from under his thumb, I’ll make a bargain with the old gods. I’d sell my soul to be free of him. But the goddess of spring offers me a deal that feels too much like a reward to be safe. And when I’m delivered into the hands of her son, I start to wonder if I want to be free at all.
Never make deals with the devil, or the old gods.

This is book one in the Valley of the Old Gods series by Dalia Davies. The world building in this book is amazing, I’m already fully invested after just one short 62 page novella. 😆
I’ve had this book on my tbr for a while now. When I realized that Easter was fast approaching I figured what better way to help get me into the holiday spirit. Let’s just say it’s worked. I’m now going to have to set some traps just in case the Easter bunny comes nosing around this Sunday. 🐰🪤
About the story:
When trying to escape her controlling and abusive ex Lilly decides to go to the Goddess of Spring for help. No money in her pockets, and no where to go the Goddess is her last hope. When offered the choice between what she thinks she wants and so much more than that what will Lilly decide to do? Like all the stories surrounding the Gods we must remember nothing is ever free. What price will she have to pay for the choice she makes?
I purchased the audiobook over the weekend so that I could listen to this at work on Monday. It was very well done and I’d recommend it to anyone. It’s also available on Amazon in paperback or on KU.

I enjoyed this story a lot. I’ve already got the sequel downloading right now so I can listen to it sometime this week. I love that we get a special flavored “essence” in this book. There are a few other monster romances I’ve read that included things like that and I always love it. I can easily say that this flavor is my favorite so far but only because it’s one of my favorite flavors ever in real life. Imagine my surprise when I heard that. Lol Well like I said above, I’m gonna have to hunt me down my own Easter bunny now if that’s what they taste like. Lmao 🤣

As for the romance, it's just gearing up with some FASCINATING interplay of power and desire from both parties. I'm used to more... simplified is the polite way to put, but trite but more accurately reflect my opinion, of Dom/sub relationships with very set in stone roles, sometimes bordering on or outright abusive.
But this explores a more playful aspect of that dynamic even as their higher stakes than normal for each, especially Lily who has found ambition fleeing an abusive partner in becoming the mother of the next ruler of the Valley. It's fun to see her genuinely find empowerment even in submissiveness, and I have hopes for her as a future queen regent.
I've already picked up the sequel, too invested to quit now!
