Publisher's summary

Gifted thief Romeria has flourished from her days as a street kid pilfering wallets to survive. Now she thrives, stealing jewels from the rich under the involuntary employ of New York City's most notorious crime boss. But when an enigmatic woman secures her services at swordpoint, Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom.

Her quest is straightforward: Steal a stone from Islor's sacred garden without anyone discovering her true identity, which would earn her certain death. But the identity she has inexplicably assumed is that of the captured Ybarisan princess - an enemy to Islor after she poisoned their beloved king and queen on the day she was to marry the prince.

Her betrothed, the newly crowned King Zander, detests her with every grain of his handsome being. Zander gives her a choice: life in a cell or an acquittal of all charges in exchange for her help in exposing the growing plot against him.

Romeria sees no other option and embraces the tricky role of smitten queen-to-be until she can escape. As she digs deeper, she discovers monstrous truths that could spell ruin for all.

Fantastic start to a new series!

A Fate of Wrath and Flame had been sitting on my TBR pile for months, before I ultimately decided to listen to the audiobook. I’m so glad I did! The world building in this story, the romantic tension between Romy and Zander, the side characters—it was all fantastic. The narration was also really good. I bought the ebook sequel before I even finished the audiobook because I knew I would want to dive straight in. My favorite part was the slow burn between Romy and Zander, it was perfect. The tension and steam between these two characters was delicious, and I was so happy for them when they finally gave in! The ending was a huge cliffhanger, so I am excited to see where things go in book 2!

If you're questioning this one, Don't!

This isn't my usual preference of book, but I was so intrigued by the synopsis and other reviews that I went with my gut and took a chance on it, and I am SO GLAD that I did.

the narrator was a little robotic and shirt of sounds like you're listening to Siri read a book to you, but the story is so enthralling that after less than an hour in, I stopped caring. I couldn't stop listening to this book, and I'm mad at myself for getting it just before the release of the second one later this year!

Even if this isn't your usual genre, take the chance! you won't regret it!

Stick with it, the story is worth it!

I loved this story from the start, however the narration was so disconcerting I almost abandoned it. One reviewer compared it to being read to by Siri. Perfect description. But, because I read the reviews, I stuck with it and I am SO glad I did. The narrator improves throughout the book, and she actually does a good job with the character voices and accents. I did listen to it at 1.2x speed, as suggested by another reader, and that was helpful. Anyway, great story - I love the mix of modern real world and travel to a fantasy world - and worth sticking it out in spite of the odd narration!

Terrible narrator

The story was pretty good, the vocabulary and world building just wasn’t engaging. The narrator made it much worse. Overall not completely terrible for a free audiobook.

Wowowow! (No spoilers)

I feel like I haven’t seen anyone talking about this series. And it shocks me! This book is so good, love the story line, the secrets. It’s all very interesting and kept me listening. However, (personal preference) the reading feels a little stiff to me, I would have loved more inflection during the reading!

Speed up the Narrator

I very much enjoyed the story. I think the combination of characters are greatly varied and I love the differences. There were a few characters I think deserved a little more to their story. The ending is a little cliche.

Now my issue, the narrator. I was bored at the first sentence. It took far to long to get those words out, I sped it up to 1.2 and it made all the difference to include making it sound like she had inflection in her voice. I feel that this book could benefit from a more creative narration.

Listen at 1.2 speed

Great story! The characters, world building and magic are unique. If you love fae/elven/vampire romantasy, this will not disappoint. As usual with these books, it doesn’t really get juicy until the cliffhanger - so now I’m off to the next installment.

The narrator reads way too slow. Almost robotic. Once I sped it up to 1.2 and at times 1.5 I finally got into the story and characters. She actually does nice accent changes. It’s just the drill of the main character that’s slow cadence. Someone in the comments suggested the same regarding speed so I thought I would share for the next person.
