About this listen
A reluctant prince. A crumbling kingdom. A trial that will test his body, mind, and heart.
Once in a generation, the dragon kingdoms must present their finest prince to compete for the hand of the future Celestial Empress. Bound by ancient tradition, these Chosen Princes are tasked with proving their worth—all while remaining celibate until the Celestial Courting Ceremony. For Zargris, the sole prince of the Twilight Kingdom, this was never a choice. Born in the perpetual shadow of the Celestial Mountain, Zargris finds himself thrust into a role he neither sought nor desired.
With a wrathful sister who despises him, a domineering cousin who overshadows him, and a kingdom teetering on the edge of ruin, Zargris struggles to shoulder the weight of his title. As the trials begin, testing his endurance and resolve, Zargris discovers an unexpected bond with an enigmatic drake—one whose care and companionship may be the key to unlocking his buried potential.
But will Zargris rise to embrace duty, compassion, and his destiny? Or will the stubborn prince crumble beneath the mounting pressure, succumbing to selfishness and pride?
This story contains explicit erotic scenes involving dragons and drakes, not humans or shifters. It also features intense depictions of violence. For mature audiences only.

Story
Vainqueur Knightsbane is your average dragon: A giant, fire-breathing lizard who loves to take naps on his golden hoard, kidnap princesses for fun, and make the life of adventurers miserable. Vainqueur's only pleasure in life is to watch his treasure get bigger, one coin at a time. So when a would-be thief turned unwilling minion tells him about "classes", "levels", and "quests", Vainqueur wonders if maybe, just maybe, he should consider a career change. After all, why bother hunting monsters for free when you can get paid for it?

Overall I'm happy with this book and it has me looking forward to the rest of the series. Some characters are a bit shallow, but the main ones get fleshed out more, alongside some more important world-building. I got some real life laughter and tears out of several scenes. The VA continues to do a wonderful job as well. If you like dragon-focused content, and adult content even though that isn't the main focus, you'll probably enjoy this series as it goes. The sex scenes are just a natural part of the story.
Spoilers ahead. Go listen before reading the rest of this.
I was really hoping it wouldn't be book one again but with a different color prince, and I wasn't disappointed. The fact the prince couldn't be affected by pheromones due to his injury was immediately interesting. It meant every experience he had with Elara would be genuine. It's also a powerful trait for a thinker to have, as it means his animalistic draconic instincts are far more dulled, allowing his mind to shine brighter.
It was really refreshing to get more information on Elara as well. As I mentioned, the way she broke Raz's heart in book one and made him feel awful for being in the right just made me dislike her and made the ending unsatisfying. It was good to see her reflect on her actions and explain her situation. Although I was hoping Zargris would solve the mystery of her origin all on his own, he at least wasn't as surprised by the revelation, and was questioning things leading up to that point. By the time Elara had finished her mini arc in this book, I was back on her side and hope she apologizes to Raz when she sees him again.
I wasn't the biggest fan of either queen, and that might have been the point. The dawn kingdom had an apathetic emotional nympho, and the dusk kingdom had a calculating psychotic narcissist. Their end was probably the only good outcome for the kingdom as a whole, even though the dawn queen might have been capable of a redemption arc. I think the dusk queen was praised too highly. Despite her kingdom being clean and well-maintained, on a micro scale we saw how she handled all personal relationships, and that's highly likely how she handles everyone in her life: harshly and cruelly. Just because things are clean and functional doesn't mean they're good. As a quick aside, it was great to see an ancient dragon treated as if he gained wisdom over the years instead of just being huge.
Zargris making up with his sister was delightful. Learning to love their scars as reminders of how far they've come was also nicely done. Those who have dealt with pain are often the most empathetic, and in turn they'll both be great leaders in their own respects. I can only hope the overall arc of the world is Elara working with at least a few other princes of the realms to help push the world towards a better future for all of them.
Speaking of which, I'll end my review with I'm very much looking forward what will certainly be a gratifying spicy threeway... rulership.

You will experience a LOT of rough moments. You will say "That's rough buddy." Far more times then is comfortable. The characters go through A LOT more in this book then the first. Yet it all hurts the same, and not everything is cleared up cleanly. It did make me feel even worse for Razzan in the first book once you are further along in this one. And it gets dark dark at times that I had to pause and breath for a bit and then back into the emotional torture of a scene.
The spice in this one is amazing, even out doing the spice in the first book imo. Well written and do to the length was worked up too a little longer and even more was done here. It does make me wonder what the next few books will go into it. And eagerly looking forward to more!
And of course bonus points for being dragon dragons. No shifting into humans or anything. That alone makes this book highly rated for me. It does exactly what I want in that regard, no humans to focus on all on the dragons and drakes.
A Great Follow Up, Even Darker

This is an amazing story with smut added in, not a smut story with plot. I fully recommend this adult story!
