Amanda was ready to start exploring the lake. She bought what she needed in town, including a fishing pole, packed her snacks, and using a map of the large lake, she located a little island with a beach where she could tan and then swim to cool off. She spotted a cave that she would need to swim to, but it pulled at her and she had to explore. It was dark inside and the water was deep so she couldn’t put her feet down to rest. She felt something brush against her legs and screamed. When nothing happened, she looked for a spot to rest. Again something brushed against her and she decided to leave the cave quickly. But before she could move, something wrapped around her waist! She fought violently to get loose and realized something with tentacles had a hold of her. She was pulled under the water and passed out.
She woke and took a deep breath – surprised to find she could breathe. It was still dark in the cave, but the water had warmed and she was floating on her back. When she realized she was still being held, she struggled until a thought “don’t be afraid” came into her mind. Then she felt a warm trust, kindness, a feeling of being safe and sheltered. Then it told her, in her mind, that she was weakening and would not have made it back to shore. He asked if she would now save him. She figured she was dreaming, so she allowed him to proceed. When they finished, he told her to sleep – how could she go to sleep while she was still dreaming this? But she drifted off. Waking, she was on her towel. It was getting late, so she packed up. The little boat motor started right up, which she was happy for since she felt so exhausted. But back home, in the shower, she thought she saw suction marks all over her! She scrubbed and by the time she stepped out of the shower, the marks were gone.
Days later, she knew something strange was happening to her. She had to return to the cave to get answers. She met Zarkos who had been with her. He told her his story. Two others of his alien race had survived the escape from their planet when an asteroid hit. Xias and Eshu joined him. She agreed to be with them as well, to provide them with offspring, the entire process only taking a few weeks. Then they would leave Earth when their new ship was completed. All three of them were tender and loving toward her. She had given them hope for another chance, for saving their species. And she was finding her own purpose and a new energy to make something of her life. Where would they go from here? Would Amanda find someone special, as Zarkos said she would? Would the aliens ever come back?
This was a good story, definitely for adults, but the story line captures the imagination. The characters were so respectful and kind that it wasn’t difficult to accept their appearance. Grab your copy and see how Amanda gets through her next few weeks – and beyond. In the audiobook version, the narrator seemed to give emphasis randomly all the way through – sometimes it was at the right time and other times unnecessary. This awkward pacing made listening slightly uncomfortable.
