About this listen

Xalax

When I see her groped and humiliated at the auction house, I have no choice but to buy her. Even if a virgin human female costs as much as all the minerals on Fenda.

I don’t care if it’s against the rules, if the healers say our DNA isn’t compatible. I’m the Crown Prince. I make the rules. I take what I want. And I want her. She’s my proper mate. I can feel it. But first, I must claim her. I’ll try to be gentle with my delicate little creature, but I don’t know if I can....

Resa

I'm a marked human female, bought and paid for. He can do anything he wants to me. This gigantic, muscled alien has total mastery over my body. I've never done this before...with human or alien. I'm frightened, alone, and trembling, but I can't help but imagine what it will feel like when this hulking creature takes me....

Why would I desire this brute? Even if he's the one who saved me. The only one to show me kindness. All that stuff he said about bonding and mates, that's just alien superstition. It's not what's happening. Is it?

Contains mature themes.

Has potential

The story had potential if it were longer and allowed to elaborate more on several things.

I was very disappointed in the narration because it was so stilted. I actually questioned a few times if it was AI.

Could’ve been better!

The following ratings are out of 5:

Story/Plot: 📕📗
World building: 🌏🌍🌏
Character development: ☺️😍
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Resa - it is her 20th birthday which means she is marked to be sold to a Zalaryn male. Earth can no longer grow things and feed humans. Humans are now in debt to the Zalaryns who provide for them in exchange for marked females who are sold to them as slaves. The virgin girls who can breed and whose DNA is compatible are marked. The Zalaryns are those who have saved and enslaved them.

The Hero: Xalax - the Zalaryns have more technology than Earth, but they still seem barbaric. They are over 6 ½ feet tall, hulking and muscular, they have no hair, they have fangs, and only wear breeches and boots. Xalax has hopes his father is still alive, but his body has not been found so he is losing hope. He is being declared dead and Xalax will be king. Though he would rather go back to bed since he is hungover. The high council announces his coronation will be in two months if he finds a mate by then.

The Story: Xalax and his best friend go to the auction house to check out the new human females that were brought in this day. Xalax is definitely not ready to become king. He is privileged and known to be a slacker. The high council isn’t on his side either. Resa is embarrassed and sickened by the auction process. Apparently, the human women of this time are very virtuous, naïve and have no knowledge of some of things we know about like DNA and technology. Also, the men at the auction are awful. Xalax is disgusted by the men and the proceedings. Most of the men on the planet seem to by mysogynistic dirtbags that think of nothing but sex and in a very bawdy and crass way.

This one started ok but got a bit boring as it went on and I had some problems with the story. I didn’t like how Resa got used to and got to like hanging around naked because that is what Xalax wanted. Some of the intimate scenes were uncomfortable more than sexy, I am not sure if it was the writing or the narration, but I suspect it was a bit of both.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration. It was narrated by Justine O’Keefe and Tristan James. Justine has a soft feminine voice which is good, though she speaks at a tempo that you can tell she is reading. Tristan James has a nice voice, not as deep as I usually like but it is good, and he does a great job.

Just okay for me...

2.75 stars. While the story was interesting, I didn't really care about the characters or anything that was going on. There was no chemistry, and the whole thing was kind of boring. There were some nice differences from most of the other alien/human, which was definitely a plus. Perhaps I will find the next book more enchanting.

Not the best.

I really wish they would’ve showed more of the characters falling for each other because at the end it was just like oh showing how much they love each other, but we didn’t get to experience that from them throughout the plot

a bit different then your average auction book

good book, these aliens are not very nice to their humans at all but that has potential to change now the new crown Prince has taken his human queen. interesting storyline that continues though the series (3 books) has action, adventure, fated mates, rebellions and interplanetary politics. well written and thought out world and characters. the narrators took a little getting used to for me but they were decent and got better the longer you listen. I enjoyed this book and the other two.

Very good

This is a very interesting story that has to do with some aliens that want to take over the place of high king.

Good Start

The series is off to a good start. I must admit that I felt for Resa until the usual dumb attack that occurs in Humans in these type of stories; this scenario is getting a bit stale and predictable. Narrators did a good job with characters. On to the next book!

The story had me until the end.

This is your typical dark romance with the big alpha male race that dominates females the fact there is human tributes and auctioning should clue you in that this is not going to be a story that starts off with any favors to lead characters. However, the character development of the drunk prince stepping up to be king, changing the treatment of women at the auction shows there is potential. Him supporting the female lead’s artistic skill and passion. Him waiting until she is ready all has the makings of what is good about this trope. The female lead isn’t a very strong character, definitely more of a damsel in distress, which is not my favorite. However, not every female character needs to be a total bad ass to be interesting and given her isolation/shunning her journey to self realization is a little different.

But THEN when they get in their first argument ever towards the the of the book he basically says, “if you leave, you are going to get SA in every possible way by everyone and as soon as that happens our bond will be broken.”

And I’m sorry, as much as I enjoy this genre of sci-fi now and then, I cannot get behind the concept that if a woman is “taken” against her will then she is broken/defiled and the bond of a fated mate is severed. That is some patriarchy bs that I cannot get behind. SA is never the fault of the victim and their partners should love and support them more, not less. I really hope this is not a concept that makes it to the next book.

The book is still a 4 because this is really such a small part of everything and the male lead realizes he messed up by saying all of that. I recognize the author might have just been trying to give reason good enough for that third act break up to make sense, but I think it was way overkill. Anyways, this world has potential. So much can be improved in their society and I am still interested to see where the story goes. So despite that once incident it is worth checking out if you like this trope.

Female voice was like nails on a chalkboard

Please put more emotion in the narration, the voices made the story dry and boring. The guy was ok, female was awful!

unique aliens

This book had an interesting storyline. I'm a little disappointed that I have to get the next book to see how it ends up. The narration was good
