Elizabeth is insulted by Darcy at the Meryton assembly and, instead of taking offence, she decides to tease him. He, in turn, attempts to apologise but never gets a chance to, because she is so good at evading him. Later that night, he does ask her to dance, but she begs to be excused. And, with each time Elizabeth charmingly rejects him, Darcy becomes more and more drawn to her. During their subsequent meetings, he decides to tease her back and finds that he is having more fun than he has in years. Elizabeth, on the other hand, never having been teased before by a handsome gentleman, becomes a little enamoured herself.
They dance at Lucas Lodge, read together in the library at Netherfield, and stroll to Oakham Mount. And both start to fall in love. But then, at the Netherfield Ball, Darcy sees the atrocious behaviour of her family and decides to warn Bingley against them. Elizabeth overhears this and is deeply saddened by it. He, in turn, sees her crying and is tempted to propose…
