Publisher's summary

"Never trust your heart."

Kane Colton has lived by those words ever since he escaped from an unholy mating bond that turned him into a monster. Now he only cares about three things: protecting his packmates, watching his blood brother's back, and keeping his wolf's bloodlust under control.

Rachelle "Raven" Winters has come a long way from the scrawny street kid whose only protector was a lone wolf shifter called Hunter. Now she's an agent for a secret organization that hunts dangerous shifters.

Her latest mission is to stop a gang of criminal rogues - led by Selina, the woman who lured Hunter into her corrupt web and destroyed him. The last thing Rachelle expects is for the trail to lead her to Hunter himself - Kane Colton.

But Selina is more powerful than ever - and she wants Kane back. When the passion between them explodes, Kane and Raven must fight Selina for one last shot at happiness - and trusting their hearts is the only way to save each other.

Contains mature themes.

Good!

I was curious as to how Kane could be warmed up! He was such a piece of work in the shifter series . He was so stoic and cold throughout the entire shifter series, dismissive and disrespectful most of the times … besides the bare marginal acts but no warmth. This story was very good well done . No a flip of the switch but a paced story showing his past trauma . Loved Rachel’s character and roll in Kanes journey.

Really enjoyed this story

I think this might be one of my favorites out of the whole series! Finally someone to tame Cain!

Silver Lake universe

This was a continuation of the Silver Lake shifters series. I enjoyed getting to hear Kane’s story but I have to admit I liked the first series better so far. I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Jackson’s performances. She makes me forget that there is only one performer. But this time she made the voice of Rachel similar to the villainess Selina’s voice. Fortunately, we Audible listeners can always listen to the sample before purchasing to get an idea of the narrator’s talent.

great story, happy to hear kane's backstory

There are a lot of things to like about this story; I felt the unnecessary drama was minimal, every dramatic situation seemed plausible and necessary for the progression of the plot. The fmc was strong and likeable, and I was excited to read Kane's story, he's been the gruff, but still likeable enforcer since the silver lake series, and I thought his story was well developed. My biggest complaint (and it's truly just a matter of preference for me),was the narrators take on the fmc's voice. Hollie Jackson is a fantastic narrator, if you've read the IPB series, you're well acquainted with her. However, the voice she uses for the fmc in this is, first and foremost, quite similar to the antagonist, and secondly, the voice itself is just...hard to listen to for extended periods of time. Picture a stuck up woman, who is far too good for you, too good for this place, too good for this food and thinks everything and everyone is below you. She sounds like that. again, just a personal preference, but for as likeable and down-to-earth as the fmc is, her voice doesn't match her at all.

Very much worth a listen

I have listened to several books by this author that are in a similar vein. This one will have a special place in my heart. Despite being female, I identify with many of Kane's struggles. I laughed out loud many times, and I felt soothed when his pain was being soothed.

This book is special.

As with other books by this author, I am not particularly fond of the cartoon-y villains and the love-plus-wishful-thinking solution that magically pops up to save the day at the end of the story. But those moments are short and I can live with them.

I wish the narrator had chosen a less annoying voice for Raven. She sounds very pretentious even though that's not how her character is written at all.

Enforcer turned marshmallow

I was hoping for a feistier romance between Kane the “stick up his A” Enforcer and Rachel the lost girl turned super spy. But after the original Silverlake series spent so much time building him up as a tough guy, he got the most juvenile and cute romance, complete with water fights and ice cream. There were chuckle worthy parts, however they felt so high school squee that it clashed with the F bombs and sex.

By now I’m ready for the villain to only appear at the end for the hyperbolic evil monologue and the minute climax. Here, however the mystery goes from Scooby Doo basic to adding super powers,
making this even more comicky than the original series.
