About this listen

Joelle D'Angelo's best friend, Mara, is left with brain damage after she suffers an aneurysm giving birth to her son. Alone and grieving, Joelle turns to the only other person who understands her pain: her colleague - and Mara's husband - Liam. What starts out as comfort between friends gradually becomes something more.

Torn by guilt and the impossibility of her feelings for Liam, Joelle sets out determined to find help for Mara, no matter how unconventional the source. Her search leads her to a mansion in Monterey, California, and into the life of a woman shrouded in mystery. Carlynn Kling Shire is a healer and, according to Joelle's parents, saved Joelle's life when she was an infant. As Joelle is guided down an unfamiliar path by a woman keeping her own shocking secrets, she discovers that while some love is doomed, some love is destined to survive anything.

I very rarely find a Chamberlain book that I do not enjoy however, the word of enjoy is a vast understatement for this selection. This book takes you through modern day with reflections of the past by intertwining two very compelling stories. The last few chapters is sure to raise your eyebrows then reach for tissues. Loved!!!

Wow!

I expected more out of Diane. Her previous books that I’ve read were much more exciting and emotion driven. This was very blah

The Shadow Wife was such a joy! The title doesn’t do it justice. Just when I thought I knew what was happening there was a twist! I love the story.

I love this book!

The old adage, what you dont know can't hurt you stands reasonably true in this story. A mystery inside a mystery that you wont see coming until the end. this story is well versed and easy to follow. If you enjoy trying to figure out what will happen next and emotional rollercoaster rides then this book is for you.

Narrator ruined the book for me! Good story but the voices were irritating. Would not buy another book with this narrator

Story interesting, Narrator was terrible.

I am a big fan of Diane Chamberlain and I can't think of a single book of hers I haven't loved. The Shadow Wife is no exception.

As most of Chamberlain's books, the story alternates between two time frames. Written in 2010, we are introduced to a nurse in her mid-30s who is divorced and lonely. Her husband left her because she couldn't have children, and her best friend had a brain aneurysm a year earlier while giving birth. These unfortunate circumstances leave she and her best friend's husband devastated, and relying on one another for comfort.

Chamberlain takes us back to the 70s when she was born and almost died as well, but was fortunate enough to be touched by a known healer, and miraculously healed (so the story goes). We hear the healer's story from the 30s going foward, until both stories meet in present time.

Chamberlain is a master story teller. I can't stress how much I adore her books, and I savoured 'The Shadow Wife' as I did all of her others.

5 big stars.

To be honest this book had me from the beginning. The characters were so well thought out that I found myself interested in what would become of them. The story of life and love in the past twists it’s self up with the present day and both are intriguing.
There are some sad elements in the story but it kept me listening and stealing bits of my time to listen for a few minutes here and there when I couldn’t listen for long periods of time.
Just when you think “someone is going to lose” in the ending and outcome, it all seems to fall into place. I love a story like that. I immediately recommended the book to my online book group at work. Then I began a search for more books by the same author.
It’s not predictable but it has a good ending. It was just a nice story.

A Nice Story
