Marty Ross is a Scottish author and storyteller, best known for a long series of audio dramas, particularly for BBC radio. This has included Rough Magick, which introduced William Shakespeare to witchcraft in the Scottish highlands, A Hundred Miles, set in contemporary Russia, A Breath from Other Planets about the Austrian expressionist comoposer Arnold Schoenberg, and My Blue Piano about the expressionist poet Else Lasker Schuler. Horror and science fiction have been a strong element of his output, including the three plays of BBC Radio 4's The Darker Side Of The Border - The Captain of the Polestar, Olalla & The Brownie Of The Black Haggs, as well as the Celtic gothic of the serial Catch My Breath & the equally Celtic science fiction of Ghost Zone, another much-repeated serial. He has also written two audio dramas for Big Finish's Doctor Who series: Night's Black Agents & the Lovecraftian The Lurkers At Sunlight's Edge. He has also written an audio drama for Big Finish's Dark Shadows series: Dress Me In Dark Dreams. For the Wireless Theatre Company, he has had produced his surreal tragi-comedy Medusa On The Beach, effectively a Greek tragedy set in a modern English seaside town. For 3DHorrorFi, he wrote Blood And Stone, based around the legend of Hungarian 'Countess Dracula' Elizabeth Bathory. This was nominated for a 2012 Rondo Award. His stage plays have been performed in Liverpool, London, Nottingham & his native Glasgow. His novel Aztec Love Song, a thriller set in the Glasgow suburb of Newton Mearns, where he grew up, was published by Weathervane Press in 2009. Glasgow, Like A Stranger set in the urban south-side of Glasgow, a crucial landscape in his work, is also available, as is his most ambitious novel, the recent Dances Sacred & Profane: A Gothic Romance, which combines his love for the gothic horror genre at its most poetic and romantic with his experiences working as a guide in Austria. Ross frequently performs as a live, 'stand-up' storyteller at venues ranging from pubs & libraries to Scottish hillsides and the 'Devil's Pulpit' in the German Harz mountains. Most recently he performed his show One Man Halloween at the Etcetera Theatre, Camden as part of the London Horror Festival. In December 2012, he will be performing his Christmas show Ghosts Of Christmas Past at the Chilwell Arts Theatre, Nottingham. Among his chief influences, he would cite the gothic tradition in literature, especially Poe, Le Fanu, Blackwood, Hoffmann, Robert Aickman, Tanith Lee & Angela Carter. In the thriller field, favourites are Cornell Woolrich & James Ellroy, although he was introduced to the 'noir' aesthetic by Batman comics of the 1970s. His favourite contemporary author, by a country mile, is Joyce Carol Oates. The films of Polanski, Bergman, Herzog, Val Lewton, Ken Russell, Svankmajer, Borowczyk, British studio Hammer & the German expressionists are also major influences, as are the music of Shostakovich, Mahler, Schoenberg, Bartok, Debussy (from which Dances Sacred & Profane takes its title), Henze, Takemitsu, Kaija Saariaho & Alfred Schnittke. Surrealism & expressionism are also key influences.
