John Melnick was born in 1952 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He has lived there all his life, except for the five years he spent in Saskatoon. Always active in sports, John is in the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1975, John graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor degree in Communications and a major in Business Math and spent the next 27 years in the Financial Services industry. In 2002, John endured a severe clinical depression. On September 19th, 2002, he swam into the fast-flowing Red River, thinking that the only way to end the horrible pain of depression was to end his life. In the middle of the river, he decided to live. He swam back out and spent the next six weeks in the psychiatric ward of the Victoria Hospital. John has been “in recovery” ever since. In early 2003, he sold his Financial Planning practice and started searching for the cause of his depression and ways he could become mentally healthy. In “Rise Above,” John shares what led to his depression and the strategies he has discovered to improve his own mental health. His hope is that the strategies in this book will be of benefit to others.
