For over two decades, Simon Chapple was a heavy daily drinker, enduring hangovers, carrying out regretful behaviour, and suffering from a lack of motivation. Somehow, he still managed to build a successful business and run 15 marathons, but he was never truly happy and didn’t feel like he was anywhere near the best version of himself. He knew something was missing in his life but he couldn’t put his finger on exactly what it was. Finally, it came to him: his love affair with red wine had become toxic and was no longer serving him in a positive way. Alcohol was controlling his life and he realised he had to claim back the power if he was to find happiness. At the height of his alcohol addiction Simon was drinking three bottles of red wine a day, with beer or spirits on top. He suffered severe anxiety, low moods and never felt truly fulfilled or happy. Relationships were suffering, his health was a constant worry and he was simply functioning instead of thriving. All the while he was carrying guilt, blame and shame for an addiction he didn't understand or know how to beat. Exploring how alcohol featured in his life was the first of many steps towards finding the key to unlocking a life of freedom from drinking. By the end of it, he’d found complete peace, happiness, and joy for the first time since he was a child. Because the changes Simon experienced were so life-changing, it became his mission to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, and more importantly, the benefits an alcohol-free life can bring. Simon describes the process of quitting alcohol as a 'magical journey' and says that it is not something to be afraid of, instead he encourages people he works with to see it as a lifestyle choice that they are making for themselves in order to become a better and happier person. Simon says 'The toughest stage in the journey can be when we realise we have a problem with alcohol and don't know what to do about it, once we have found the right strategy, support, tools and tactics we have a plan and can begin the incredible journey of moving forwards towards freedom.' Simon describes the stages towards sobriety as: Unawareness or Ignorant Bliss - We are drinking way too much, but don't believe it is a problem. Awareness - We realise our drinking may be out of control, this leads to an internal conflict and we often don't know what to do for the best. Education - We begin learning about how to quit drinking and what an alcohol-free life might look like, we start to get motivated and excited about the changes we plan on making and how they will positively impact or life. Practice - We begin taking what we have learned and putting it into the real world. Sobriety is rather like learning a new skill and we need to practice it in order to change long standing habits and master our new sober lifestyle. Mastery - This usually comes after 4-6 months alcohol-free, this is the point where we no longer think about drinking and find ourselves in a place of complete freedom, peace and happiness. Simon is the founder of Be Sober, one of the largest and fastest-growing online ‘quit drinking’ communities in the world. If you haven’t already joined the Be Sober movement you can do so for free online, simply search 'Be Sober'. Simon is a senior certified alcohol coach for This Naked Mind, founded by Annie Grace author of the bestselling book This Naked Mind - Control Alcohol and The Alcohol Experiment - A 30-Day, Alcohol-Free Challenge to Interrupt Your Habits and Help You Take Control. He has helped thousands of people explore and change their relationship with alcohol for the long term. He’s spoken at live events and appeared on TV and radio on his mission to help educate and inspire people who are wondering what a life without alcohol might look like for them. His first book, The Sober Survival Guide was released in 2019 and has sold thousands of copies around the world. Simon wrote the book to help anyone who’s concerned about their own relationship with alcohol and thinking about making a change. To do this he drew on his considerable life experience, and the experiences of those he’s helped, in order to provide real-world advice and tactics that can be used to make a positive change. His second book, How to Quit Alcohol in 50 Days - Stop Drinking & Find Freedom is released in December 2020 and provides readers with a one-chapter a day path to freedom from alcohol. Simon says 'How to Quit Alcohol in 50 Days is totally different from my first book, I wanted to provide readers with a very clear, yet simple structure to quit drinking. The book holds the readers hand as they move through one chapter a day and gives them everything they need to successfully stop drinking on their own. The book has exercises, questions and reflections for readers to complete and comes with a downloadable workbook.' Simon's approach is that we should move into sobriety with a sense of excitement and a feeling of joy that we are gaining something special and becoming part of a wonderful community. There is no deprivation, stigma or shame, this is a positive journey of growth and readers should feel empowered that they are making a personal life-choice that allows them to be the authentic version of themselves. More recently Simon has shared his story about childhood trauma and how this is directly linked to alcoholism and addiction. This is a topic that is addressed in his new book - How to Quit Alcohol in 50 Days. Simon lives in Surrey in the UK and works with clients all over the world, in between writing he works as an alcohol coach, mainly in group programmes as well as running a successful YouTube channel that shares helpful advice, support, tips and tactics for stopping drinking.
