Story
Intrepid hero Cork O'Connor faces the most harrowing mission of his life when a charter plane carrying his wife, Jo, goes missing in a snowstorm over the Wyoming Rockies. Months after the tragedy, two women show up on Cork's doorstep with evidence that the pilot of Jo's plane was not the man he claimed to be. It may not be definitive proof, but it's a ray of light in the darkness.

My last Cork Oconner read
Reviewed: 09-21-20
I liked the last book, but I think I am done with this series. I have listened to all but one of this series through this volume and been swept away by the majesty of the Great North Woods, the main characters, particularly the Native characters, and glimpses into their lives. But the author has chosen to change Cork so dramatically until he is hardly recognizable, and dropping or changing main characters I have come to expect. And now a lawman who won't carry a gun to enforce the law, or to protect the ones he loves? Seriously? Plus the protagonist keeps ending up fighting cartels and big crime far from his own little corner of the world, where true enough, there would be plenty crimes to solve. Also, the new narrator changed the tone of the novel, with unfamiliar sounding names that kept me stopping the story and re-listening to previous paragraphs to be sure I was still following the story. Overall, I was disappointed with the book. I will now search for another author who writes more about the time and place I have come to love.

Story
Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the brightest thinkers, inventors, and artists. It was founded by Albert Ellingham, an early 20th century tycoon, who wanted to make a wonderful place full of riddles, twisting pathways, and gardens. "A place", he said, "where learning is a game." Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym "Truly, Devious".

To be continued...seriously? NOT by me!
Reviewed: 12-12-19
I enjoyed the book after I got into it, because it was a page turner. A bit slow and obviously a YA book, which I did NOT realize when I bought it, but waded through the teenage angst to the end as I was drawn into both A and B story mysteries. But then, at the end, "to be continued..." What the hell? Just a setup to sell a sequel? I NEVER buy a second book of a series which has a first book that just drops everything and goes home. Same as the Mockingjay series which was a clear setup to sell more books, but this book takes the cake--my apologies to Marie Antoinette. I won't read another book by this author. Ever.

Spare me Henrik Ibsen and Rosmersholm!!!
Reviewed: 05-22-19
I liked the book per characters, story, etc and the narration was excellent, but if I ever hear "Henrik Ibsen Rosmersholm again I will probably scream! The quotes went from disconcerting to annoying to absolutely distracting. By the tenth time I heard this prefacing EVERY CHAPTER I found that I was losing interest in the story because I was perpetually preparing for the next aggravating opening. PLEASE "Robert Galbraith" do not do this again. The work is too good without this distraction.

A childish political rant. I am done with this author!

I got as far as the first hour before I had to drop this book. Up until now I loved the series and its characters. I buy fiction to be entertained. This book totally left the storyline time and again to spew out some nonsense babble pointing to the last Presidential election and basically blaming the molestations and other violence committed henceforth to the new administration. It is rare for me not to finish a book but it was so bad I dropped it and got a refund. Its tone was that of a petulant child. I want to be engaged with characters in a novel through its characters and by its storyline. I wont buy anything more from this person as this book was nothing more than some sad and frustrated child. There was no story. No plot. Nothing to connect to but an angry writer and life is too short for that, especially if you are paying for it.

An excellent read! Would you expect less from McCarthy? Of course, as you WOULD expect given the subject matter, the story is a little dark (not light and airy as, oh say, "No Country For Old Men" ~grin~). Can't wait for the next title, Mr. McCarthy. Keep 'em coming!

Story
Before his untimely death in 2004, Larry Brown was hailed as one of the world's greatest living writers. With A Miracle of Catfish, the unfinished but largely complete novel Brown left behind, listeners can once again savor his eloquent and unique style. This tale of fatherhood, alienation, and loneliness introduces readers to another set of Brown's irresistibly flawed characters.

Larry Brown's "Miracle" (edited and published posthumously by Shannon Ravenel) is just that. Readers will find Larry's final work, though not quite finished, continues in his style of gut-punching truth, pulled from the smoke and fog by Ravenel, and delivered in a tight package.
