Story
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Phenomenal! Extraordinary! Remarkable! A treasure!
These are only some of the words I would use to describe Meacham’s triumph of a biographical and rhetorical work on the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. I am beyond grateful for this thoughtful, nuanced, and in-depth look at the life and evolution of Mr. Lincoln. I’m highly recommend it for anyone looking for a holistic and complete understand of the motivations of Lincoln, our nation, and the war which tore us apart.

The Best of the New Books
Reviewed: 07-16-22
As a middle-aged man who grew up loving Star Wars, I have typically enjoyed the tangential stories more, as well as the pre empire eras. This however is one of my favorite of all the Star Wars books. It brings Luke and Lando closer, tells the story of Rey’s origins, introduces a previously unknown Sith Lord, and connects to amazing new characters. I highly recommend.

My least favorite Star Wars book so far…
Reviewed: 03-14-22
I know this is a young adult novel, and as such the themes that appeal to and are relevant to young adults are different than older adults. However, this book was overtly hormonal. Everyone is in love with everyone. The adult characters were even unable to separate feelings of romantic and friendship love at times. Beyond that the story was over all boring and slow. It was also disjointed at times. Even the unexplained reappearance of a fan favorite didn’t help the story. Generally not a fan.

Story
Drawing on his years of reporting, Jenkins examines the reemergence of progressive faith-based activism, detailing its origins and contrasting its goals with those of the religious right. Today’s rapidly expanding interfaith coalition - which includes Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and other faiths - has become a force within the larger “resistance” movement. Jenkins profiles Washington political insiders as well as a new generation of progressive faith leaders at the forefront today.

Really well done
Reviewed: 07-08-21
Jack Jenkins does a wonderful of exposing and lifting up the work progressive people of faith are doing to life out their faiths in the world. It will be dismissed by those who already want to dismiss it, but for those who have “ears to hear” it will be encouraging and inspiring.
My only wish is that Jack, who comes from the progress camp, had more deep interaction with religious conservatives. Though this work is about religious progressives, I do think once or twice religious conservatives weren’t accurately represented.

I feel like I have been pastored and discipled
Reviewed: 05-07-21
In reading this book, I feel as though I have been pastored and disciples anew. Peterson was everything I would have pushed against when I first started in ministry, and everything I want to be now. He is the pastor I never knew, but like Henri Nouwen, has pastored me from afar. This book is like a love story to its readers.

Worth the Read for both Progressive and Conserving people
Reviewed: 12-07-19
The strength of this book was it’s coherent, well-crafted, and thoughtful logical arguments. Also, the compassion of the author came through clearly, delivering hope.
The weakness was assuming there only one viable biblical interpretive method and occasionally ignoring the entire nuance of scripture when making a “biblical” argument.
